IH #45 Field Cult. Hyd. PROBLEMS

My brother has a 26' IH model #45 field cultivator (I think that's the proper name for it). It has a wing on either side which fold up for transport. (The hydraulic transport system works just fine.) It is set up with two master hydraulic cylinders on the center section and one slave cylinder on each wing. The problem he has is the wings will not fully drop. The center will be at the desired depth and one or both wings will still be up out of the ground or only partially in the ground. One side is worse than the other, but neither side works properly. If a person holds the hydraulic lever back on the tractor and lets it "growl" a while, the wings usually drop more, but still not enough.

Apparently there is air in the lines, but it seems no amount of bleeding will correct the problem. Uaually after a time consuming effort to bleed out the air, the wings drop better, (still not right) for a while, but after a few series of up and downs, the problem is back, as bad as ever.

We have two neighbors who had similar models with the same problem. At times they worked at it so long, they had pumped five gallons of oil on the ground and still the problem persisted. Finally they each traded off their machines.

Is there some trick we are missing? We did not buy the machine new, but near as we can tell the entire system is as it was from the factory.

Any help would certainly be appreciated.

Thank you,
Glenn FitzGerald

Just like IaGary said, lift it all the way up and hold the lever for several seconds, then lower it all the way down and hold for several seconds, and back up again...I spose you can do that as many times as you want, but it should take care of it.

My old Kewanee Field cultivator was set up that way.

It would do the same thing as far as the wings not staying balanced with the rest of the cultivator.

To balance the cylinders, you would lift it all the way and hold the lever in the lift position a few seconds to balance it.

When lifting on the ends, to turn, it was important to lift all the way so it would balance at each end.

When it was new there wasn"t any problems and it didn"t matter about lifting. But when it got to be about 10 years old you had to do the lift the thing all the way to keep it balanced.

dose it have dual acting rams or one way? it should have dual and it sounds like they are leaking inside or they are bent and that don't take a lot sure the frame is not sprung and the wings are binding. disconect one end of the rams and cycle them to see if they work with no load
