I have several bearings to press onto some shafts. I got the idea to take them down to the basement with a hydraulic jack make up a stand/platform and use floor and beam to press those buggers on...(I don't have a shop press) I guess it will work, it shouldn't take too much pressure to press them on. I'm feeling kinda clever right now. maybe I should cut a piece of wood as a guage to fit from floor to ceiling to make sure I don't pick the house up...lol

Go to harbor freight and look at one. Go home and build it.

My 10 ton press cost 100.00.It does many jobs,I wouldnt be without one. There is a fine line between frugal and foolish.A 4x6 metal cutting saw is another must have tool.

Let us know how that works out if your wife doesn't kill you.
I'll repeat... Houses aren't as heavy as one would think....

+Years ago I worked for a construction equipment dealewr, and a lot of the berings need heating to instal. We used a deep fat fryer with Crisco ( or something like it) to heat the bearings up. I think it was something around 300 - 350 deg.

Big Hunter,

Frugal is a great quality ,it's when you
impose your frugal on some one else that it is known as cheap .

If you are not too cheap to buy the gas to get to whiteford , I'll press them on for you at the low price of free .

I'll be in the shop till at least midnite.

george

Emery cloth goes a long way when installing bearings.

Damn, Wipe the cob webs off of 2 of those $100 bills and go buy a 20 ton press from China Freight (harbor freight) =) I dont use mine much but it does most of the jobs I need done. And those that it wont, I take them to the Amish machine shop and they do it.

I think I'm completely capible of putting bearing on shafts, don't think I need a pro for this. I've tried one bearing with the heating method (I hung them next to the wood stove) and got them a little more then warm to the touch, had the shaft in the frig., I had to tap (not beat) it down onto the shaft, got it all but the last quarter inch. So I figure the jack to beam will slide it on without the tapping and get it all the way on. This is fun!

Stand clear when the timbers fly around the room. Without some cross-bracing the whole rig is likely to buckle and then the fun starts. The vet bills are likely to exceed the cost of having it done by pros. Good luck.

Be extremely cautious. I think you are going to find out that the floor will raise up long before that bearing is pressed on.

If going onto a shaft then a heat lamp or even an oven you can heat them up so they easily drop into place. Usually when spit sizzles good on them they are well done. Others will know the exact temp. to not go over.

Once the seals melt you have got them too hot.

If they are sealed bearings then yes you would really have to watch this as it may not work for them.

You could try putting the bearings in a freezer and heating the bearings. They should slip on that way. A CO2 fire extinguisher or some other compressed gas could work too.
