Thanks Tom 43 I grew up on them but for some reason couldn't recall In the process of timing the cam and the fuel system on my R and the john deere service manuel refers to them as # 1 and # 2 could you believe some of the responses to my question. How about all the degrees from the one dummy, or why they sound like they do, Thanks

PS Also concerning why they sound like they do "pop pop pop pop" is NOTTTTT TTTT what some think that youre hearing left fire then right fire which would be pop pop ---- ----- ----- pop pop

buttttt ttttt what youre hearing when you hear a pop is the combined sum total of the left n right firings NOT left then right seperately

At a seminar workshop once at a national Deere Expo or somewhere I think it was JR Hobbs who explained that including doing the math up against the human ear response curves which explained how n why what you hear IS NOT left pop right pop pause pause pause pop pop buttttt tttt the pop your ear hears is the sum total of left PLUS right

Dan, the Left No 1 cylinder INDEED fires first at 0 then 180 later 2 right fires then its correct that theres a 540 coast cycle (a complete 2 revolutions or 720 total) before left No 1 fires again. Im not sure who posted what, but the guy who posted that is correct.

Perhaps someone should have told you that they are numbered, like nearly all engines, from the timing end and left you to work it out from there. Any dummy new that in those days and never ever forgot because it was the convention, so that engineers could easily sort out any engine. Basically that means that the pot numbers are read from the cam shaft, the engine's 'brain'. Back to right or left - it depends on where you are, in relation to it, in front or behind.
Regards, Another dummy who learns why, so he doesn't have to remember everything.

Umm, Mr. Thornton, that "dummy" was absolutely correct on the degrees of rotation between cylinder ignition. Have a little respect or leave. Leaving would be the preferred option.
