Can anyone tell me why my TD-14 water temperature gradually rises to "hot" going downhill and immediately cools back down to normal on the level or going uphill? This occurs while working the tractor or not, at part or full throttle. The radiator is full of a water/antifreeze mix.

Mike French has the cause nailed. Those heads were prone to cracking and running them down hill with out the extra tank made cracking even more likelly. Try not to let it get warm running down hill or you will crack a head. Very hard to find a replacment head that's not cracked. There's a bunch of guys over on the red power construction forum that know the old IH crawlers inside out.

where is the temp. sensor located? could the coolant be no longer be in contact with the sensor when the machine is going downhill? I think this was a problem on john deere "M" tractors.

FYI, the sensor is at the top rear of the head! I think your theory is spot on.

This was a common problem with 14s and 18s. They made a extra coolant tank that went on top of the radiator fill to help with this, in theory when the engine is pointed down hill the water goes to the front of the head, I had on that did the same thing, old timmer told me about the extra tank, mine didnt have it because it came out of the bottom and not the hills. Hope this helps

Interesting---you would think that if the system was full of water on the level it would still be full of water on a slant.

on a downward slant couldnt the top of the radiator be lower than the back of the cylinder head?

I guess that's the idea! I suppose I can't get the system so full of water that there would be no room for air, thus no place for the water to "run to" going down hill.

I would check to see if the tubes are plugged first. Stan

I don't know but is it a thermal siphon system? Or does it have a water pump. If thermo siphon the water cannot circulate when pointed donwhill. Just a guess. Not familiar with this model.
