Has or does anyone use products in engines, such as Slick 50, Dura lube or these types of stuff for tractors that are not run often? I"ve never really heard anyone say anything for or against.

I think Energy Release is a great product as it is a metal conditioner,it fills the microscopic irregularities in the metal and decreases friction resulting in longer engine life etc.I use it in differentials (not posi) and trannys, also hydraulics. I had a Ford Grenada with a slow power steering.I put in one ounce and within two minutes I had fingertip lock to lock steering. This product I believe is endorsed by aircraft industry.

Ran a "street stock" race car on dirt for 4 years straight with Havoline 20w50 and Lucas Oil Treatment. When it was torn down there was very little wear in the lower end or the cylinder walls. Also ran Fram oil and air filters.

You would do well to do some google research on some of those various products with an emphasis on emperical data rather than advertizing.
Slick 50's basic component is PTFE or Teflon. It's slick alright... Until it settles out in the oil. I think you'll find a fair amount of evidence of that, leading to plugged oil filters, and thus the complete LOSS of the engine due to no lubrication. At the very best I'd say 90% of these products are a clear waste of money. Perhaps 10% of them add greater concentrations of anti wear additives that are already found in the oil you're using, so I'd suspect that the gains are minimal on most of those products. They at least don't do harm which is a contrast to what the other 90% could do.
Synthetic oil is an entire different ballgame. I believe there are benefits to it's use. Whether or not there's enough benefit to pay for it's high cost is another story. I spose if you get the extended drain intervals and save on filter costs you might come ahead, but if you change oil as you always did before I don't think you'll gain much. There's no shortage of OTR diesel's running 1-2 million miles today with no major repairs, all done on plain old dino oil. Cars and light trucks routinely run until their bodies fall off also.... so i don't see much point in using synthetic oil there or anywhere else UNLESS you get the extended change interval. Who knows... mabey I'm wrong, but that's how I see it.

A good unbiased test of Mobil 1 and Amsoil synthetics...

listen, every additive that claims this and claims that is just not so. As one person said on here, it's like running the next highest viscosity of oil.

Additives work in that they make the oil thicker; in fact, that's how marvel mystery oil works.

Now on the other hand, I stand by Lucas oil, because it makes the oil sticky and therefore clinging to the moving parts.

Synthetic oil? I laugh at it... You're wasting 10 dollars more on a 5 quart bottle than if you were just buying the regular oil! WHERE did the claimed savings on the gas mileage go? Yeah, you guessed it, you spent it on the synthetic oil!! Clearly not cost effective, and the idea of a "fake" oil such as Mobil 1 makes me laugh.

Sorry but marvel mystery oil is definitely thinner than the oil I"m putting in my engine. Personally i love the stuff. I make sure to add a bit with every oil change and have yet to have any engine troubles. I"m not quite sure how it works but it does seem to. I also add some to the tank per bottle instructions before i go on a long trip and my gas mileage is always noticeably better for at least a few weeks after. And for what it"s worth i soaked the seized engine on a tiller i got for free this spring for a few days and what do you know runs like a top. Only costs a few extra $$ at changes and whether it works or not it gives me some peace of mind.

That test is for the lucas additives. I run straight LUCAS 85-140 oil (their OWN oil) in my gearboxes.

Additionally, i'd never run lucas in an engine because i really don't like mixing fluids in an engine anyway.

big 'ol Trannies and gearboxes are my suggested use of lucas.

I guess you can keep laughing then, seems there is a bit about synthetic oils you don't get. I have seen many examples of what it can do for an engines life but the best example is my 96 Sierra w/ 5.7, just turned 369,000 miles. Did a compression test last year and mechanic said all 8 were within 10% of rated compression. So you can keep on laughing, as I keep driving toward a half million miles, thanks to the Mobil 1.

There's also a difference between a 3000 mile oil change and a 10000 mile oil change.

I will keep laughing until the cows come home.

Yep and my GMC get one every 6,500 to 7500, so I guess I see what it can do and if nothing else by the extended change interval, it pays for the synthetic oil. If you talk to anyone who does oil analysis on engines, as my company does, you would find out, tests don't decieve.

The thing is oil a supplements , have gotten a bad rap in most cases . When they are used for they are designed to do like leave a slick oil flim on rod ,main, cam bearings and cam lobbes ,and other moving parts from dry starts. As for the oil companies they are not going to put no than they have too. If someone thinks you can get an engine overhaul from a can or bottle thats where the good supplements.

Check the MSDS on those products. Their main ingredient is high viscosity petroleum oil. Same effect as running 20W50. The other ingredients tend to be so small in ammount as to not have a chance of doing anything.

Slick 50 paid a couple of million dollar settlement a few years ago for false advertising. Decide for yourself what that says about their product.

The only thing I believe in when it comes to oil is Mobil 1 or Amsoil synthetic. The additives claim to boost HP, get better MPG, longer engine life, etc. I dont know of anyone who uses the additives but if they were good I would here more about how great they are.

Keep your money instead of wasting it on snake oils - if they were the cure-all, the new vehicle manufacturers would put that stuff in at the factory and the engines would run forever!

... or maybe that's why Dodge has a lifetime powertrain warranty now? Slick 50 in everything that moves? LOL

If you have never heard if it helps or not, there is a reason.

If its needed in the oil the oil companies will put it in.

Wife fried the top end of a Toyota Corolla. Filled it with Motor Honey and it made it to a dealer to be traded in.
