i'm looking to upgrade my 8N. I 've been looking at a ford 1720 4wd, kubota 30hp 4wd and a new holland tc30 4wd. i've been told that non of those will plow ground like my 8n. i'm a weekend farmer doing food plots of up to 5 acres. any suggestions?

I have a 1715 NH it's - 27 HP - 4WD - 9 Spd std - with Live Hyd & live PTO . And you can use all the attachments that you have for 8n plus it can be trailerd behind a 1/2 ton PU .

I'd go with the one that you have the nearest and best dealer for. Period.

I think everything has been covered already. If you are looking to upgrade you have already noticed the short comings of the 8n, geared too high, no live PTO, no live hydraulics, no power steering.

Something newer with more gears and live power would probably be a lot more enjoyable to operate. I would shy away from Turf tires. I spent some time on a Kubota this summer with R4 turf tires, they don't leave a mark on the lawn but I needed the 4 wheel drive to pull anything. Probably wouldn't plow too well. A Ford 2000 or 3000 would solve those problems listed above, but it woudn't be a new tractor if that is what you are looking for.

It just occured to me that R4 tires are actually an industrial tread, not a turf tread. The traction on them will be better than a turf, but not as good as an agricultural tire. They will probably wear better than the ag tire though.

There were a lot of small farmers around here who farmed 20 acres with an 8N. Many had got a older used 8N and sold the horses. If you are only doing 5 acres stick with the 8N, or if you want something better get a Feguson TO30. Looks like an 8N but built much better all around and easier to work on and more power. you will spend much less on one of those even if you rebuild it front to back. Just my oppinion, but parts for the new ones are totally rediculas.

I don't know much about compact tractors but you aren't going to plant multiple 5 acre plots with an 8n in my experience. We went that route and spent most of the time working on the tractor not with the tractor. Replaced it with a Massey 165 and it is 10 times better. I shy away from compact tractors. Prefer the older heavier Ag tractors. I do have a Garden tractor. We use it on the Garden. That's what it was built for. Not 5 acre food plots.

Not to be smart, but for five acres you don't need a field tractor, you need a garden tractor.
Put a one row no till planter unit behind it and get yourself a pull behind sprayer and stop wasting all your time and money on fuel and wear and tear on expensive machinery to work the soil for no reason.

Most of the "farmer's market" growers are trying to go organic, so they need to do tillage rather than the "better living through chemistry" route.

I would take the logical upgrade, Ford 2000,3000 ect. Tons cheaper, more HP and, most importantly, way less money for parts that are readily available. Just my view. Dave

They will plow well, They have more power than the 8N, but not as much Wt. With wheel weights, and beet juice in the rears, they will be fine. Kubotas are as bulletproof as 1" structural steel. JimN

the kubota i am looking at is a 30/30 with a loader. automatic. what are your thoughts on an automatic? need to pull a two bottom plow, disc's, planter and brush hog.

A Kubota B3030 with hydrostatic is not what you should be looking at if you're plowing anything.

The NH 1920 is a well respected compact, if you see a 2120 even better.

In kubota around that size you should be looking at a L series economy model or a M5000 so similar.

For the plot size you indicate, the difference in efficiency between gears and an auto are not important. You will very much appreciate the usability of the loader with auto. JimN

I am looking at the same type of tractor. I am finding used tractors are pretty high. And new ones, like the tc30 have cheap financing programs. I haven't gone and priced the kubota yet, but a tc30 with loader is 15K+ with a 0 percent financing over 5 years. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of some other ones, but the 4wd, power steering, and loader are pretty good. I should have bought a new years ago, rather than struggling with some of my old stuff.

With a loader for general around the farmette jobs, all 3 are wonderful, big step up.

Plowing with a tractor where the wheels don't line up in a row is a little tough, and compact 4wd tractors jenerally have a narrower front than rear axle.

I've done it a bit with my 1720, but it's not perfect.

Depends what you need to do I guess, are other things needed to be done, or just the plowing?

Live pto, power steering, gonna be a whole lot more fun. :)

mostly plowing, discing and pulling a two bottom corn planter. i use a two bottom 12" ferguson plow and with my 8n have no problems. i am nervous about the r4 tires. i just don't see them as being a good as ag. tires. especially for what i need. overall you are happy with your 1720???

I farm, nothing but ag tires for me.

I've pulled my JD 7000 4 row planter with my 1720. It's a load, but it got 100 acres planted a few years ago.

12 inch bottoms aren't much of a load.

I run a 5 foot tiller on it, that is a load in sod or the like.

Also run a 7 foot snow blower on it, with the slow reverse works fine.

Great tractor. Think it runs almost every day on the farm for one little task or another.

If by auto you mean a hydrostatic tranny - well, I dislike those a lot, but my personal preference is all. I believe they are innefficent, lose you some power, cost more & more to repair, and so on.

that's just me tho, one of those 'sore spot' things. Sme folks just love them, couldn't drive a tractor with a real gearbox. Me, I have a hard time operating the hydros, feel more natural with the tranny gears.

My pickup is a standard tranny too tho.....

I think Kubota & NH are both good products, with a dealer somewhere near I wouldn't be afraid of either.
