I was digging a few post holes yesterday [ BY HAND } where I could`nt put the tractor even though it was right beside a lane . I run into this problem every so often here with all the hills, hollers and ditches , just cant quite get there . Well my little pee brain got to workin and I think this would work . I`ve got a old 480 case backhoe and was thinking that a guy could take the rear bucket off and mount a Hydraulic drive self leveling digger on the boom like they put on skidsteers . Power it from the lines that generaly run the bucket . Set up , reach out pull the bucket lever and dig a hole . The big question is are the hydralics right to do what I`m thinking about or should I just ask santa for some new hand diggers ??

TGIN,

Sure it'll work! But don't stop there...for the backhoe I've built a log splitter and a buzz saw. Now I can do all of those little chores from the comfort of the cab. Heck, the log splitter will even stack the wood!third party image

i just use a 2-man ice auger. and belive me... you need 2 guys to run that. works real good. you could drill holes in 10 inches of snow if you want to cuz it's inteneded fer ice! works like a dream.

Ok don't try that pushing thing if you have hard ground. I wouldn't like to stand around when someone try's that on many of the grounds round here. Especially the kind we call pinnmo (have no idea of a english word for that) If ypu try to push a pole in to that you will soon end up with sticks or if the pole is thick enough a lifted tractor. Pinnmo looks like gravel but is hard as rock, it can be harder than frozen ground, hard enough to force a 25 ton excavator to use the hook for frozen ground to losen it up. If its not the hardest kind i.e. soft enough to excavate stones at the edge of the bucket will rather brake tha come lose. Up till the 70's when excavators weren't as strong as now one had to use explosives to dig ditches in it. So take into consideration what kind of ground you have before you try pushing anything into it.

heres a thought back at ya, but it may get kinda ugly in the fabrication. dont know if it will work either. buuttt, if you have a 3 point digger, make a bracket to hook it to the bucket mount, use a hydraulic motor, hook it to a gear reduction box and run it that way. you are probably only using and 8-10 inch auger, and the hand held power augers dont need that much hp. that way when your done you got your 3 pont auger back. maybe grab a reduction box off an old grain auger.

I have a 580C Case backhoe that I just "planted" 67 - 2 5/8" steel pipe posts layed out on 10' centers. Takes two people to do it right. One to operate the backhoe bucket on top of the pipe to provide the driving force and one to keep the post vertical using a magnetized 90 degree V-level stuck to the side of the pipe. Cut the posts 9' long and drove them in the ground 3'. Of course I'm in sandy loam with no rocks. Plan to leave them alone untill next summer to let cold weather and silting do their jobs (if any), then weld up the horizontal runners and top rail. bob farrell

Got any help? Have sombody hold post in place, take loader bucket, or hoe bucket ( best) and apply pressure and punch that sucker into ground, workes great, no digging involved. Jack in Fla

If there is a construction grave yard in your area go look for an aux. valve from a backhoe. A lot of hoes had hydraulics for an impact hammer or a pavement grinder ect. on them. You might find an old bucket that is worn out and cut the mounting brackets from it for your drill. The hydrualic motor you need may be on an old ready mix truck or circle turn on a motor grader, might even find one on a batwing mower.

Thanks MFPoor , Thats just what I need . Now to find one selling at a farm sale while everybody go`s after a cup of coffee !! That does answer my question of wether the hydralics will run it . To afford it I`ll hav`ta find a used digger and make my own mounts or it`s just a dream , them new diggers would be worth more than the backhoe I put it on !!

That's sorta what I was thinking. The heavy duty models are VERY $$$$$. Even the cheapest isn't cheap. But the idea is very much workable.

I don't know what pressure and volume that old case has, but even if it is low, you could run it through a reduction gear box and it would do the job.
