I used a small drill to put a hole through my thumb nail tonight at work after I smashed it a little. At first it didn't hurt so bad, but a few hours later it was starting to really throb...

Went to the tool room and grabbed a small drill (maybe .047 dia, I forget) and twisted it on & off whenever I had a chance until it finally broke through. Good for short term releif but now it's back to throbing. Oh well, in another couple days it'll feel better again....

Aint the 1st time I've drilled a hole in my thumbnail, but I coulda swore that last time it felt better a little longer atleast....

Sometime it'd be fun to have a doctor laser it, but for now the drill is cheap and probably still faster than going to the hospital and waiting...

And for the record, I aint ever gonna try a needle. Just ain't gonna do it.

Red hot paper clip. Then only thing hurts is burn. Think I leave it alone next time.

Haven't done the thumbnail dance in a while, but in July I had a good knuckle removal story. It was the usual 3:30 friday evening rush to get done, I was loading green 18' long 1x12's off of a trailer into a storage shed. I had one step to go up, as you enter the narrow door, so I was holding the board about waist high, with my left hand, fingers pointing out, right hand fingers curled under the board, pointing in. As I stepped up, I heard, and felt a "pop", as my pocketwatch face crystal shattered onto hundreds of shards of glass. What shattered it was the pressure of the board, transmitted through the first knuckle, outside surface contacting the glass, inserting the knuckle into the now broken watch face. What made it worse, is that I knew that there was nothing to do now, except grin and bear it, as I leveled out the board, laid it on the stack, and then look at the damage. What had happened is that when I leveled out the board, the watch more or less surgically cut off all the skin on the knuckle, down to, but not hitting anything really vital. I could see white tissue, but not the bone. Kinda felt like sticking your finger in a pencil sharpener! Damnded thing bled like a stuck pig, and throbbed all night. Took the bandage off, looked the same 24hrs later, and started bleeding again. Finally stopped it with a dropper full of Gentian violet solution we had for about 50 years, settin' in the barn. The instant that Gentian violet/alcohol solution hit the hole, I could swear I saw smoke comin'from the wound! That sting was one for the record books.

I have also used the small drill. Worked good for me. By the time I got hot paper clip in place over my finger it was too cool to go through the nail. Stan

Now you know why they are called NAILS He, HE. Every once in a while I try to nail mine to the floor or wall or something else that is harder than my finger, the pain goes away in a year or two so don't get to excited about it.
You want some real fun try running your hand though the knotter using one of the needles as a guide. Boy now that hurts.

2 years ago while looking at an excavation job, I caught the 2nd to last finger in the truck door, kind of a light slam, boy those hurt, kind of a pulsing kind of pain, had to try and keep my composure while finishing up, talking with the owner, who was actually a friend, the pain was quite distracting nonetheless ! Think it was the first one ever to turn completely black and fall off. I went to the index of drill bits later on and carefully back and forth whittled out the hole to release the pressure, for awhile I had the car hood thing going, flip top nail, eventually fell off, dried out, grew back by the end of September, happened in the middle of May.

Don't be such a chicken. Heat a needle up red hot and you don't have to do much more than touch it to the nail and it goes right through. The doctor drilled a hole in my toe nail on my big toe years ago. I hauled can milk and was unloading off the top deck. I lost my balance somehow and dropped a full can on it. Don't remember ever feeling pain like that. Went to the emergency room after I took the truck home. Biggest problem was,the bit was dull and caught when it broke through, twisted the already throbbing nail. !@#$$%%^&*

Smashed my finger in school when I was about 10, many, many years ago. The nurse called my mom and she came in an took me to the doctor in town. When I saw him heat up a paper clip on an open flame, I started screaming like a banshee, he came at me with that paper clip, my mom was holding my finger tight to the table, he put that paper clip on the finger nail and the blood squirted out, and the funny thing was that there wasn't any pain, so I shut up.
Have done that many times to myself at home since.

I use a red hot paper clip end. The flat end of the wire opens the hole better and allows for more drainage.

My Dad used to do that I have used a needle before. I shut my fingers in the truck door one time, I was done for the night. I just set down and put an ice pack on the finger that got it and it didn"t turn black or even hurt long.

I've been that guy Paul mentioned. A drill press sounded like a good idea to me. I skipped the emergency room visit.

Smashed is smashed. Relieving the blood pressure under the nail certainly helps, but the smashed tissues still hurt.

Donovan,
Done that several times, sterilize the drill with a torch first, and turn slowly by hand of course. It only works if you can get right into the blood blister under the nail.
Years ago one of the brighter guys at the shop used this method but forgot that he had been told to turn the drill by hand. He used a drill press with the expected result. Drill clear thru his thumb and a trip to ER. Of course no one laughed at it afterwards.

OK, now soak it in some water with espom salts. That will help and relieve the pressure.

Donavan have you ever tried a red hot needle, just melts nail and has advantage of being sterile.

I'm right handed. I drilled my nail on my right hand with my left hand with a cordless drill. Sure wish I would have known about the paper clip trick. That was about a month ago and I just lost the nail this week. No, I didn't drill thru the finger but it was hard to just pierce the nail, especially with the left hand.

Neighbor smashed his in the wood splitter. I ran him to the Dr. They took off one joint and folded the skin over the end. By the time he got home his son had everyone calling him stubby.

Done this many times, you surely don't need power equipment.Just take a small sharp bit and roll it with your fingers till it pops thru.Doesn't take but a minute and it sure feels good when the pressures off.
