Ebay OEM manual rip-offs or bargains?

There was some "discussion" a few days ago on Deere forum (11/18/07) in regard to a Deere tech manual for sale on Ebay. SM-2045 - covers fuel injection systems for early Deeres up the late 70s. For some reason, the person is advertising it as a 4020 tractor book - which it is not.

I made the point that - I often see such books on Ebay that sell for more then you can buy them new for - at many places. And, I got some disagreement.
P. Browing stated that Ebay is a "buyer's market" right now. Seems to me - it is still, often a buyer's "rip-off market."

Well today - that "priceless rare book" is up to $108 plus shipping with a few days to go - Ebay item # 150184530407

Same book is for sale, right now - for $33 at DeerelyDeparted. Also, Deere Company still sells it. I also see it for sale, right now, at two used book stores - one for $40 and another for $50.

This is what I was talking about. People see things on Ebay, and buy without doing any research - and this drives the prices up (on Ebay, anyway).

Hey, I don't care if someone likes throwing money away. It does cause inflated prices though - and I put this out there in case there is some poor sucker that does not realize such books are available elsewhere.

I have plenty of toys: cars, trucks, atvs, tractors, sled, bikes, etc..I have bought all factory original manuals for each and every one of them. I'll buy them on Ebay or at the dealer, but only original will do.
That being said--I also make it my business to sell only original manuals on Ebay. I price them fairly, and ship em quick. Selling only originals worth reading, the rest get thrown out. Manuals go all over the world too!

I have started buying original New Holland manuals on ebay because the pictures in the new reprints are bad photocopies - the originals are much higher quality.

John,
A hammer is alot more of a personal item than a tractor manual. I have a hammer that belonged to my great-great grandfathers father. I look at it every day and the memories flood over me. Just like any collector item it isn't perfect. I had to replace the head once and put in a new handle but other than that it's all original.

(sorry couldn't resist)

Yes; you are so right ! I see that all the time. BUT why doesn't my stuff bring those prices ????

Guy at work made a few extra bucks selling "rare" pontiac engine part. We are a GM dealer and could order all you wanted. He bought a few and stuck them on ebay and did allright.

I got caught up in a bidding war on a service manual for the Oliver 17/17/1955's once. When I got it, most of the pages were stuck together so a good portion of it I really can't even read.

I've seen them go much higher than I paid so I don't feel too bad, but it still amazes me how some people run it up several days before the auction is over and then more people jump in on "the steal of a lifetime"

I've gotten several manuals from ebay and all the other times I didn't do too bad at all.

Hammer away at them JD. I've seen too many originals bring way more than I would ever pay too and didn't get answers to my questions before bidding when I asked if was truly guaranteed an original I would receive when pic looked fishy on their ad yet it was advertised as original copy. So another thing to beware of with ebay sellers is far too many advertise an original manual like that and then ship you a crummy photo copy and then disappear like flies after the hard frost! You can get stung more ways than one with online sellers tricks and just have to beware of the shadows unlike at a live auction with thieves lurking in broad daylight.

Counter man at JD told me the he can order reprints from JD on the counter parts manuals for the old JD's. I got a reprint from an ebay source and the numbers were very thin on some pages. Sooo that was the end of ebay reprints for me.

I buy, sell, and collect Ferguson and Massey Ferguson sales literature and manuals. I buy quite a few off of EBAY. Fortunately for me, Massey literarure isn't valueable enough (yet) to draw the counterfiet or copied manuals like some brands. I've talked at length with a Deere collector who photcopies manuals and sells them on EBAY, never really telling his buyers that his are fakes. 75% of his buyers don't know the difference. Another 20% don't care. The balance gives him bad feedback which he challenges. (After all, he never said they were ORIGINALS)

Not everyone, but a great many EBAY buyers are just like any auction buyers. They think because it's an auction, they'll get it cheap no matter how much the pay. (Can you follow that logic?) The thinking is, obviously if someone else just ran up my last bid, it's worth more. That's why EBAY is so popular with sellers.

Also consider that some collectors want original 1st printings. Many currently issued manuals are virtually the same as the originals, but they aren't QUITE the same. (Some are updated, some are printed on different paper stock, different ink color, ect)

But most likely, someone is letting themselves be had.

I agree and understand that some people are looking for original literature and are willing to pay for it. But . . . the post on the Deere forum was originally about buying the book for the repair information - not as a collector's item. And, even if for the later - I know where there are several original copies for sale - cheaper - with as set price.

And that's the why behind my final sentence in the earlier post.

A very valid observation. I see many current new Deere parts, not NOS, sell for much more than available for at local dealer. The item sells and the item is replaced with another and it sells just as well. Yes great for the seller it is free trade. Maybe there are those who have no access to a nearby dealer who are willing to pay a premium.

I, for one, appreciate you taking time to post this. It always amazes me when people spend more on a used item at an auction that you can buy it for anyday new.

Hey, It is a fact that an "experienced" hammer will sell for more on a farm auction than a new one sells for at the hardware store!
