My brother gave to me a heated stainless steel water dish. His dogs would not drink from it. Mine won't either.

Does it need to be cleaned with something special?
Is it a stray voltage type problem?
Thank you
SDE

I made one from a short heat tape and a dip in the middle stainless food bowl. Just wrapped the heart tape around the inside of the outer part and duct taped. I have used for 4 years, just have to replace the duct tape every couple of years. Cats, dogs, racoons, possums, etc seem to drink from it very eaqerly.

These are just on the other side of my fence at the back off my property. I get to look at them but don't get paid.
A couple of wind turbines on the place would have been ok however a 500KV powerline is a barrier to anymore turbines to the south of the current project.
I'm a bit worried the dud with the shocked dog seems to have zero interest in finding out what is wrong with his electrical service.

In spite of always having a clean bowl of fresh my dog likes to drink out of the toilet.

I needed a good laugh today and "thanks" you have provided me with one. I can relate to that scene very well. A big Yellow Lab doing that and a tiny Chug trying to mimic her big Sister causes some good laughs here aside from the "Toilet Thing".JC

I have had a plastic one for my dog for four years now with no problem. If I remember the temp is controled with a thermostat that only heats when it gets to freezing, and only warms to just above freezing. Clean it up and put it away in the spring, and dig it back out in the fall. Greatist thing since sliced bread.

I have a cheapy plastic heated bowl from Tractor Supply Company. If works great and both the cats and dog love it.

Dogs are funny about their likes and dislikes. I gave my dog a heated mat and she was absolutely terrified of it. I ended up giving it to the cats; they were perfectly happy with it.

Aloha, Maybe you should plug it into a ground fault socket to see if there is a leakage. If the ground fault trips, then there is your problem.

Just curious...

Do dogs, cats, etc. really like to drink warm water? I sure don't! So why would animals like it.

Wet tongue and wet feet, probably the dog can feel a quarter volt and not like it.

I read a paper about testing cows between wet nose and wet milking parts. The cows reacted at a fraction of a volt. The cow given a couple volts "became uncooperative after that and was dismissed from the experiment" so the academic text of the paper said. I expect the cow kicked the experimenter THROUGH the barn wall and then exited through the hole made that way.

it's working correctly Re: O/T heated water bowl for the in reply to SDE, 11-21-2007 17:23:19
The bowl is fine and working as per design. What is happening, you hydro service's ground system is not at true ground potential. The dog is just telling you that you and everything else is at risk. This where the tinkerer who believes the ground and neutral is the same and interchangeable wreaks havock. Other trouble makers include. Undersized ground cables, high resistance ground connections, too few/too short/too close ground rods or somebody running a 120 load from line to ground. Failing hot water heaters with the external wrap around heating elements are a common source as well. More than one service/breaker panel supplied from the same utility transformer will cause ground loops. If the neutral to ground bonding/neutral floating is miss wired. If you want to see tingle voltage show up on an otherwise healthy service. Just start measuring when some genius is backfeeding a generator through a welding receptacle and supplying 120V loads. Connecting a bonded neutral generator through a properly installed transfer switch designed for floating neutral generators will cause ground loops as well. Vic versa too.

You Canucks and your "hydro" crack me up!

Windmills are the big thing here in ND right now.

So what should WE call our electrical power... BLOW???

Thank you for your info. You are obviously very knowledgable about electricity. Unfortunately for me, I am not familiar with very much of what you provided.
I had been using this bowl for dry dog food because the other bowls would disappear. She can not get a hold of this one and carry it off. I will get a plastic one for her.
Thank you everyone

Try it not plugged in. If the dog doesn't drink then maybe he just doesn't like stainless steel. stan

with a metal pan, you're looking at a possible high-resistance short circuit, even if there is only a few volts in drop.

Unless you want your animals to experience a 60Hz sine wave, toss the thing.

Animals, especially swine, can feel less voltage than humans.

If you have a Voltage meter test it out.

Stick one probe in the water and the other to a good ground.

Had hogs that were feeling 3 or 4 volts once and I could not feel a thing.

I have two heated PLASTIC water bowls for my cats. Different brands, but they work well and the cats love the warm water. With a metal bowl,I would be a bit suspicious of stray voltage. Make sure the ground wire is firmly attached to the bowl and plug it only into a GFCI.

This bowl has metal tabs on the underside of it, that hold the heating element against the bottom of the bowl. I don't see any evidence of any ground wire on the heating element or the bowl.

The foil that is placed between the heating element and the bowl looks to be in good shape.

Wind up and give the thing a toss. If the dog ain"t drinking from the thing, it"s because he is geting a jolt. Get a plastic or fiberglass heated bowl.
