I have been thinking about this, will it work? I have an outside wood boiler, and want to add more heat to my garage. I know I can purchase a hot water/forced air heater to my system. Can't afford to do that right now. In looking at window air conditioners, they appear similar in appearance. Is it possible to plumb fittings into them, flow hot water through them, and use the fan to push air through them? I would need to add a thermostat to operate the fan when it called for heat, are there other things I am missing? In my feeble mind, it just might work, and there are lots of those old things around that no longer cool air.

get a radiator out of a car, truck, tractor and use a box fan to blow across it.

Just don't vent the old refrigerant into the air - get someone to recover it for you. You'd probably also want to clean the evaporator well before running water through it, as sealed systems tend to push oil around along with the freon.

Yes, they are very popular here in New Zealand, we call them heat pumps. We are running ours now as an A/C unit as it is hot at the moment, in the winter we just switch it over to heat, it will heat the house even below freezing outside. We have a unit on the wall in the living room and another outside piped to each other.

Oh, but Gary, then you'd have to trudge outside in the cold to adjust any of the controls! Otherwise a fine idea!

Yes, though you need to have a licensed refrigeration shop remove the freon first. Might be be cheaper to use a heater core or radiator from a car or an external oil cooler of the finned type with the fan from the old airconditioner.
