I really liked the 1030CK Case we had, but for overall useability I think the 720 gasser was tops. It did everything we ever asked it to do and did it well.
We chopped, cut hay, baled, plowed, disced, hauled chopper boxes, every job on the farm. It always started and other than a sticky valve that acted up once in a while it never needed any major repair. And with flat top fenders it was about the best looking tractor on the farm.

Weight for age my vote goes to the Case 4894. For it's age a very nice tractor to operate.

For it's day; for what it could do... the Ford 4000. The later Force model to be specific. They were as tough as nails, asked for very little, and just keep going... even today.

For all those who said they all have their problems... totally incorrect! There is one tractor that has absolutly no problems and never will. The Essex Tri-Directional, need I say more. Personally though the best we have had would be one particular Case 1070, 1270, 2390, and a Massey 1800. Very few small problems from all and the 1270 has been through 4 engines yet the powershift hasn't been touched once! I know the last engine had over 9000 hours and the one before had at least 4000 hours. Showing its age pretty bad though.

The tractor that did us the most good and had a big hand in paying for 2 farms when others were going broke farming was our WD45 Allis Chalmers which I still own a 1956 model bought new in 1957. Oliver 77 and AC D19 also get an honorable mention.Of the tractors I use regularly now I'd pick my Oliver 1365 diesel easy on fuel and smooth to operate

Best at what? All depends on what your needs are. An 806 or a 4020 would be just about worthless to me. I need smaller tractors. My personal favorites are;

135/150 Massey Ferguson in the smaller utility class

5000 Ford in the mid sized utility/row crop class

4020 powershift in the 100hp range

1066 IH as "best over-all" bigger row crop

Best for me? I sure do like my 150 Massey.

NO TRACTOR IS PERFECT in reply to x22, 11-20-2007 15:02:59
Listen up people,

NO ONE tractor is perfect. There are NO best tractors.

EVERY tractor has its faults- From the 1086 t/a's dropping out on the high side to bad cold starting on a 4030, i mean, nothing's perfect!

Engineers make stupid decisions, and that goes for most ALL brands. It happens.

I wouldn't turn this into a sort of chevy/ford/dodge debate. The last time I got myself into a ford/chevy/dodge debate, I said that they ALL SUCKED based on what people said back and forth to one another.

It's just useless bragging rights.

I think that landlord7012 hit the nail on the head perfectly. There are many different sizes and makes of tractors but that all are designed to basically do the same thing. We can all tell each other what our favorite is but why does it half to be better that someone else's. When my grandpa was growing up there was no cabs and comfort ride seats. He rode many hours on a tin pan. and now there is all theses advancements but you know what that old MM R and the fancy IH 's and Deere's of now we designed to farm. Simply that. Of course there were some duds and things on tractors that were totally horrible but hey there all tractors in the end.

The best tractor ever is...

the one you swear stands at attention when you open the shed door to take it out

the one that starts no matter how cold or hot it is (though you might have to sweet talk her a little)

the one that still does everything it was designed to do and then some

the one that is a little rough on the outside but is still perfect in our eyes

the one that makes little noises to let you know something is wrong and then purrs powerfully after you rub her fenders and fix the problem

the one that even after all these years can make young boys and old men smile when they see it in a parade

the one that, if it could talk, could tell you true stories that most rational men wouldn't believe.

the one that labored for relatives that we never even met in person.

...that my friend is the best tractor ever and I'll bet each one of us here at least know where one of them is.

Well said! I have liked all of my tractors. Each one has had shortcomings, but all have brought me pleasure and done good work. Most of the troubles were due to age and/or neglect by previous owners. My best tractors are the ones that are paid for.

A couple 3 years ago there was another OT board "common ground". It rapidly changed from the friendly "Tractor Talk" OT topics to alot of BS and rude and negative stuff, which is basically why it went away. The current OT board , though mostly politics , gives you an idea what it was like. A few OT's on here dont hurt anything , those who dont like the OT stuff usually ignore it.

Just by the numbers that were sold an MF 135. Especially the diesel. They were simple, super fuel efficient, started easily and almost bullet proof. They are the most sought after used working tractor. There are places in the UK that actually buy old ones to completely restore and resell because they have such a good reputation. An MF 150 is right up there as well but isn't as popular. There are other good tractors as well. Dave
