try this even though you have a good spark, sometime when farmalls sit along time you have to loosen the bolts on the distributor and turn it back and forth to loosen the rust so you get a better ground, make sure you take a hacksaw blade or other tool to mark the spot so you can return to original position, also make sure the distributor is dry. should start right away.

you all have a lot of good points ill add that i have been a mechanic since a kid in the back yard tearing things apart... its just this one here that i have had this no start never ran into this befor, to add when head was off i also bead blasted the head & manifold pressure cleaned them then did the valves, carb i rebuilt, all new gaskets so should be seating good at seals. id love to pull start like a few of u mentioned(normally id do this over battery) but one tire wont hold air long enough to push it outside so i wanted to get it running & then get it back on trailer to run up town to get new tube in it , maybe ill have to do that first then pull it home from there Thanks for all Your help sometimes its simple & U guys know just as much as a dealer (more than)so this is my best chances Thanks

Yep ones like that can be tough. BTDT and have run into the same problem a few times. The last time was on my 1935 JD-B. Never opened up the engine and it being a hand start and all it made it even harder to get just right. I put on a new mag and a new/rebuilt carb and it would not start by hand. We ended up pulling it the first time and it started before we got it pulled 5 feet. That was also the fisrt time it had run in over 15 years and it sure was nice to have my grandfathers tractor back up and running after it had sat so long. So yep I would pull the tire off and go from there

If all is as it should be but still no strt some times you need to be able to spin the engine faster then the starter ever will do a good old pull start may end up being needed. I have run into the same problem you have more then once and most of them would start with less then a 25 foot pull. Then after a good warm up and a re-torque of the head they would start with the starter.

I think 70 to 80 should be enough compression. Believe it or not I have a 45 H that has around 50 to 60 psi and runs! (although it does smoke a lot at idle!)

I would tend to look for spark and timing, if you are certain you have both try priming each cylinder with a squirt of gas.

Check that intake manifold for leaks. Hal

You need to bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Once you have it at TDC look at the valves on No1 piston. Both should be closed and rotor should be aligned with the No1 plug tower. Set the valves at .017" cold. Hold your hand over the throat of the carburetor and see if there's any suction. Compression and manifold vacuum are all related. You need your plug wires on the cap in this firing order.
2-1
4-3 Since the rotor turns CW. Hal

Some time a good old fashon tow will get them started for the first time. I noted from your earlier post that you went to 12 volt. Is there a chance that your battary is hooked up wrong?

Since you only had the head off I would think that is the area to look. The manifold gasket could be on wrong or not tight and leaking air. Did you remove the carburetor from the tractor? Gas line or air tube might not be back on correctly. Check the gasket between the carburetor and the manifold. Are the plugs wet when you take them out? If not try sqirting a tablespoon of gas in each plug hole and put the plugs back in and try starting. It should at least fire and try to start. Do you have spark to the actual plug? Did you take one out and hold it against the head and turn the engine over and see spark? Could be a bad or loose coil wire or battery/switch wire to the coil or from distributor to the coil. Keep us posted. Dave.

notadeere,

I've seen your posts on here before and I expect you know more about engines than I do. So, at the risk of sounding really simple, please allow me to state the obvious.

1. Fuel
2. Compression
3. Ignition
4. Timing

Have you tried a "snort" of ether? Might help eliminate fuel as a potential source of problem.

Do you actually have a spark at the plugs?

Have you watched the direction of rotation of the distibutor shaft (rotor) and verified that the plug wires are plugged onto the distributor cap properly for the firing order?

Is it possible that the #1 piston is at TDC of the exhaust stroke when your rotor is lined up with the #1 plug rather than at TDC of the compression stroke?

Could the camshaft be out of time with relation to the crankshaft?

Any chance in the world that your exhaust is obstructed?

You know the basics. One step at a time.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

Just throwing out thoughts here.

Choke open? The SuperCs don't need or tolerate much choke. Could make for an "extended" starting experience.

Copper or tother metal-core plug wires? Attached in the proper order 1-3-4-2 going clockwise around the outside of the cap?

Valves set at .014 hot? Silly question, but .014 even cold should get her going for a touch up after she's had a chance to heat up. Good compression in my book would be 90 psi or better, but consistency within 5-10 lbs. per cylinder is more important at this point.

valves are set at 14 , ran the comp test had 80 on fist 2 then 3 &4 were around 70 somewhat less but should still run on that more than likely reason for less is my valve job i might not have got a perfect seat but they showed seating on the perma blue so....

i am thinking you dont have enough comp. thinking it shopuld be over 100 plus. that said have you tried to pull start it. some time a starter, if old or bad, well draw off enough amp. voltage to drop it at coil to point it won"t fire the. plugs.
