Our Chief Counsel (unfortunately no longer here) was , among other things, an apple enthusiast, and I recall him saying he had an old book (which would probably mean the teens or twenties, if not older) that listed, and briefly described, hundreds of varieties of apples once grown in the US, but if he ever mentioned a title or author I've forgotten. I know I have to do a lot of digging, but I thought I'd ask if anything like that sounded familiar to any apple growers or hobbyists out there. Any comments/suggestions appreciated. Many thxx!! Bud

Walt: Many thxx for offer; unfortunately, we're here on a 90x90 city lot, and pretty well bushed and treed in already...
Mathias: if your Dad's book is one of S A Beach's The Apples Of New York, that Sean mentioned, hold onto it: the cheapest I found was $35 + shipping for EACH of two vol's; thxx for the other suggestions.
Sean: Beach's books sound very much like what my friend referred to, except it seems he was referring to "a" book, rather than two, but, after a number of years I may not be remembering correctly.
For anyone interested, the whole of Beach's two books are online, free, at chla.library.cornell.edu (search S A Beach) but the illus are b/w; however, most are in color at hortweb.cas.psu.edu/aps/aony/aony1.html.
There's also a relatively new book out: The New Book Of Apples: Joan Morgan etal, 2000+ world varieties, $45 up so far.

I don't think I know of the specific book you are refering. In the teens and twenties the Department of Agriculture published annual yearbooks on various topics. I know my dad has at least one that covers apples.

Here are two modern books that we own and found pretty helpful:

"Apples" by Roger Yepsen. It has a hundred or so different varieties with brief decriptions and illustrations will of each. This one is pretty inexpensive.

"Old Southern Apples" by Creighton Lee Calhoun. This one is a bit pricy, but has even more varies and more descriptions. Most of the varieties are also grown in the North.

Is there something in particular you are looking for? My family grows about 35 heirloom varieties of apples.

Apples in America are a $1.7 billion industry today. Large markets favor industrialized agriculture practiced on a vast scale; the bottom line is consistency and efficiency. This factor combined with changes in American family life, has meant that within a century, the number of apple varieties available has shrunk to a tiny fraction of the 700 plus grown in the this country when S. A. Beach wrote The Apples of New York in 1905.
