Im going to look at a early '90's Chevy flatbed truck. It has a Detroit 8.2L diesel in it with around 40,000 orig. miles, Im told it runs fine. What are the pros and cons of the motor?

There are pros?
Well, mabey if it's cheap. As mentioned already, the head issues. Add to that the old Detroit fuel system that leaves a lot to be desired in my mind. I spose if you know where to or how to set them up correctly you're fine...
I'd sooner look for something with Cummins B or C power, and IH DT466 or a Louisville with the Brazilian Ford engine.... Even a 3208 Cat (gasp) would be ahead of the fuel pincher.

Ran one at work in a 1987 GMC. Just replaced it with around 50,000 miles. Never had a head gasket issue, but replaced several air compressor brackets which were prone to breaking because of vibration. We got to where we carried a spare behind the seat.

These motors are prone to head gasket failure..the main reason is because there is no block deck on the top and the cylinders are siamesed..front 2 and the rear 2..these stand alone and just are not conducive to capture a head gasket good enough for durability, and they also move around a little, which also takes its tolls on the gasket.
