Does anyone here have this kind of problem to contend with ( birds eating the corn) ?

First the canadian geese top off all the plants in the spring, summer was kind of dry, but this being a bottom field, moisture usually holds in the worst conditions, the stalks and the ears looked good at the end though, then these massive flocks of grackles, blackbirds, some red winged mixed in, swoop in, and seem to decimate the corn, I looked at the 7 or so acres here yesterday, and it looks like 1/2 to 3/4 of every ear is cleaned off, it's hard to believe.

I'm pretty sure that like most, he waits until it's dry enough before combining, so as to not have to deal with that extra step of drying the grain, but it's like a catch 22, leave it in the field too long, and the yields are looking like they're going to be reduced to nothing. I'm not sure how the other nearby fields have been effected by this, but I never recall seeing such a problem like this, seems that if the timing of things were different, planted earlier, harvested earlier would avoid the geese, and if things went well while growing, matured earlier, harvested earlier before those migrating flocks do their thing, just the outside rows would get hit by the squirrels.

I have not seen my neighbor the farmer out with the combine except once, one field was down a few weeks ago and that was it, out of several hundred acres, by the time he gets over here, hard to imagine what will be left of it. I rememeber years ago, corn standing until december sometimes without the wildlife taking so much. I'd hate to see this field not get used, and would love to figure out how to mitigate the problem.

Blue jays got a lot of my corn planted basically for wildlife, but I wanted rabbits and quail to use the corn not bluejays. Turkeys get a lot too.

12ga. 6-shot @ 50 yards, After a few times they won't come back, and they make good fertilizer.

a friend tells about turkeys pecking top off of alfalfa as it was starting green up in spring. they ruined a crop of hay in that feild. he also had them follow corn planter and eat the corn out of the row. they had several early turkey dinners that year.

Had that problem with Pioneer corn decades ago. 7 acres of corn next to 32 acres of cattails and a lake 2 miles long. Talk to your dealer- there are some hybrids that have tighter stalks than others. May not solve all the freeloading, but not all hybrids are the same.

Yeah, that's a good point, I'm not sure what he's been running in there, I'll have to ask, and see if that is any help, not sure if he's dealt with this before, always something when it comes to growing crops. I've seen some nice crops out of this same little field, 7 foot stalks, decent ears, more so in summers with lots of rain. Oats, wheat and alfalfa did well there, nice soil in there. Also have to wonder what he used to plant over the years, kind of a neat thought, he's been working that field long since before we owned this place, which is over 40 years now, probably more than 50 for him by now.

Seem to remember the "freeloading" was not so noticeable in years past, the longer it stays up, though, just keep losing more.

A flock of wild turkeys will decimate a corn field faster than a bunch of deer. Ask how I know!

I've not seen nor heard any in awhile, this field is close to the house, actually never seen them chowing in the corn. Good chance I'd hear em I think, never know though. But..., if they are in there, not good, the stalks are low this year, ears flopped down, easy pickin.

Fall hunting season has been open for them too, but when they are here,(usually see them more often in the winter), they just take over as they pass by, I took some poor resolution video of about 70 of them in my yard, got close to the tom and got a few shots of the fan action, they like those tiny crab apples left on the trees til spring sometimes. 1 or 2 will hop up into the tree and knock down all the wrinkled up crab apples left on from the fall. Then, the turkeys on the ground, literally just clean them up, it's an entire ruckus, funny to watch. They'll spend a day just raking the 20 or so acres of hillside around the house, well fed around here and the flocks are larger than ever, good thing they cover a lot of territory, don't see em too often.

No law that I know of in NY says you can't shoot starlings and grackles. I've shot into thick flocks like that with 12ga. and watch em drop. The rest leave.

Does that work ? There is no shortage of shooters here, that is for sure. I always figured that would scare em off, but then they'd return when you're not there, it's kind of sad when hundreds land in the double tree my scaffold stand is built into and rain down kernels of corn while I'm sitting in it. I've never shot into a flock of them, some of these flocks can be a mile long or longer around here.

If you leave the victims where they land, it seems to keep the others away. Hire a neighbor kid to terrorize them with a shotgun- furnish him the ammo- he'll have a ball, and you'll reduce the loss of your corn, at least.

I had a huge flock one day in the trees around my house. I think they were cow birds. I live way out in the sticks and I figured I didn't have to put up with bird crap raining down on the house and cars so I loaded my shotgun and banged a few rounds of target loads into the cloud of birds as they took off and a bunch fell out. The rest didn't come back.

Forgive me for not providing an answer or some smarty comment.I want you to know that this concerns me and many others. Some brain needs work on this because the dream of many is to have what you do and be able to deal with flyin varmints without going postal on them or considering poisons. So that's basically all I have nothing but a little thought about a wind electrical generator. I believe they are not all that massive in all types and also you have the required acreage to satisfy certain requirements. The undertaking of this could be against what gain you get back by any means electrical. There would be hub of sorts and that could be you. So your electrical line connection would be investigated one would think but more likely it's done right at the generator itself.
Forgetting all that there are the barn cats. Cats hate corn but love bird meat. They just even at kit stage can't jump 8' however their presense dissuades many a bird. Were it to be that the most temporary of avenue was put at higher level than they jump and constructed in between rows to a way that it was easily removed to not damage equip then young critters which would otherwise climb your curtains would otherwise attack fowl. They would have the time of their lives-just a thought.

When I used to work on a farm where they grew a lot of sweet corn they would let the neighboring kids ride their atv's down the roads between the blocks of corn to keep the birds out. They had good neighbors who didn't go ripping through the actual rows of corn so all worked out well.
