I just purchased this 1962 Ford 801. I have the owner"s manual. It says SAE 10 for motor oil during summer and 10W for winter. Would a 5W30 or 10W 30 work year round without damaging this old 172 c.i. engine?

I would run shell 10w30 rotella in it , it's a heavy duty oil unlike watered down car oil .

I use 10W-30 year-round. I tried 15W-40, but I found that I had problems starting in the subzero Michigan winters. In a warmer clime I'm sure 15W-40 is fine.

Modern oils have lost a certain lubricant of late. New cars have roller lifters these days, so additive is now left out on gas-grade oil.

So, I run a diesel grade oil (still has the lube in it) and typically 15-40 grade in about everything. Including my 960 Ford.

I use 10w30 year round. I add quart of Lucas motor oil treatment mainly for seal leaks and it's good for the engine.

I have a 1958 Ford 861. I run 15w40 in it year round and have had no trouble with it. Unfortunenately I have to sell mine. Need the $$ for other things that are more important. Compared to my 2n, that 861 is one bad boy. I also run the 15w40 in my 2n. Good luck!

That is what I would use if it was mine. Enjoy your old Ford.
