Reading below about Crackerhead's find of a Deere. It makes me think about deals that I have had dump in my lap. A guy I work with said that a few years ago he went to a dumpster inside a mini-storage place and pulled a working Remington chainsaw out of the dumpster, just needed gas/oil. Works fine 5 years later. As for me...I got some great deals on a Hartford indexing chuck for a bridgeport- $50 (easily worth $300 and up) I bought a Ralmike toolmakers vise for $10, easily worth $100 or more new. I bought a Kennedy roll around chest, small style for $10. I got all this stuff when my old employer moved to Ohio. I also bought 2 very nice executive style desks both for $75.

I'm surprised the banker didn't come after you- they usually take a rather dim view of bargain sales of their security on the eve of their auction (I'm assuming the cattle were security, because if they weren't, why on earth didn't he borrow against them to save the farm)?

Kevin you are right. The iron pickers in this seven county area make their living from dicards. I enjoy looking at what type of old truck they drive. Most are Chev's.

Mine is any kind of good tools ie., snap on from 50 cents to 10.00 dollars for the big un's. The guy's that buy storage lockers contents when the rent as defaulted on are doing well. Cash sales at flea markets.

Aloha, One time in December, I was passing by a warehouse that had a large disposal bin in the front and I saw what looked like a pedestal sticking out of the bin. I stopped and took a look and it was a 15" Rockwell drillpress that looked brand new. A guy driving a forklift came out with another load and I asked him if they were junking everything and he said yes. He used the forklift to get it down and I asked him why they were junking it. He said that they have to move out by the end of the year and they bought a new one for their new place.

One deal that got away was a Continental engine on a stand that used to be an emergency water pump in a paper mill. Coulda had it for less than $200 if I remember right. Not rusted tight or anything. I was about to finally make a move on it and then it finally sold after sitting at the end of the neighbor's driveway all winter. I think the new owner was putting it on a saw mill.

I've gotten a few things fairly reasonable at auctions. Got a Kools blower for $35, and a small gravity box on a Colby running gear for $105.

I also got the ROPS for my 1855 for $300, the fender tanks for the cost to make 4 pair of 3 pt. balls for the olivers, and 3 front weight slabs for $35/each.

For tools, I got a loaded Kennedy 7 drawer top for $150 an ex coworker bought for me at a rummage sale. The box alone was worth that if it were new.

table saw at auction for $ 5. no one bidding on it auctioneer couldn't get a bid so i said $ 5 he said sold. it took 3 of us to load it on my pickup truck. the saw weighted about the same as the motor. it appears as it was built from a kit.

I bought a 1949 John Deere A tractor at the Jerry Hanson Auction sale in June 2006 for $575.00. It had a Live Hydraulic pump that I'm not using, so I sold it on YT for $330.00. That tractor also has .045 over M&W AddPowr Aluminum Pistons (which I'm keeping!)

I've got several lawn mowers, engines and lawn tractors at the Dump. I got a TORO GTS that is a great mower, needed nothing, put some gas in it and it starts and runs great. I sell my small engines from the dump on eBay, I got a 11 HP Briggs engine at the dump, ran great, sold it on eBay for $110.00. I've got good money on several other small engines too.

One time a nice old machinist insisted that I take an 8" General jointer off his hands for $150. A friend gave me a 3 hp motor for it and I hired a blacksmith to make me a metal stand for $50.

I think the guy just wanted a good home for it.
It's a great tool.

There was a MF 203 industrial with a loader where I was doing a discing job. Previous owner just left it. land owner said get it off the properity. Motor was stuck, and needed a injuction pump and a few other items. I got the motor freeded up. and found a used pump. I put a lot of hours on that tractor doing mowing jobs. Bought a MF TO 20 for 600.00 Quite a few of just good deals on various other tractors. Brother, and I have all Dad's tractors I guess that's a good deal. The one that got away: I found a indian 4 cylinder complete motor for a give away price. I told too many people about it, and one of those people bought it out from under me before I could come up with the money. Stan

In 88 I worked with a guy whose widowed sister had a Silver King tractor in the woods where her deceased husband had left it. He said it was mine for free. Its a three wheeler and needs rims and o/h. In the end I gave her $50. (she was not hurting financially). bought an 028 Stihl for $1 at yard sale. New piston and rings been using for 5 seasons. The one that got away.... In about 85 I went to look at a 340 Farmall wfe. I didn't have any money but my dad said go look and if its okay we'll go back tomorrow. the price was $1,100 and he said it smoked a little. I looked and he threw in a brush hog, back blade and one other imp. Like I said I had no cash. another guy walked up offered $900 and bought it all.

I bought a brand new post hole digger with a 14" auger for $1.20.
A few years back when Country General stores were closing, we found one with a PHD. We loaded it into the cart and took it up to the check-out. Since it was disassembled, the clerk rang it up as "Tractor Parts", which had a 75% discount. She entered the "before discount" price as $4.80 instead of $480. We questioned her and the manager (who was right there watching) more then once. They said that it was correct. We paid and loaded it up before they changed their minds.

I'm a non-recovering auction junkie! Went to western MN years ago for a 15 foot Gleaner bean head. Farm sale, two combines. Bought a bunch of stuff I wasn't looking for- some to keep, some to sell. Passed on an IH 510 drill at $850- didn't want to scare the banker. Combines went last, auctioneer says he'll sell choice- you get the heads that go with each. Added up the F and heads, figured I could go $4500 and sell the excess. Got the bid at $2000. Took five trips, 90 miles each way, to get everything home, including driving the F. Sold the corn head for $3200, delivered, about an hour away. Knew it was worth that, since I sold an identical head to a local dealer a few years before for $5000.

Saw an ad in the Capital Press (ag newspaper published in Oregon) at 9 PM, for an IH 674 tractor with loader, about 5 hours away from me, for $4,500. Called the seller in eastern Oregon, he said someone was coming at 10 the next morning, why didn't I come then as well? Why, indeed, thought I, unless I want him to get it instead of me? I got up at 0 dark 30, and was there by 9:15. The thing was perfect- everything worked, etc., etc. I watched the horizon, and as the 10 AM guy was making his way up the valley, I was closing the deal. I used it for 3 years, then sold it for $6,250.

Then, of course, there's the "ones that got away"- In 1974, while a loan officer for PCA, I talked to an Alaska fisherman- he liked me, and said he knew of two Bristol Bay salmon gillnet fishing permits (one for me, one for the Mrs.)that could be had for $7,500 apiece- He just knew they would be worth big money in a few years, because the State of Alaska was on the verge of limiting entry to the fishery. I actually had the money, on account of a small inheritance my wife had just received- Me and the Mrs. talked it over, but decided it was too risky (if the State of Alaska rejected the limited entry legislation, they would be worth nothing). Of course, you can guess "the rest. . . of the story"- Limited entry passed, and 5 years later, Bristol Bay permits were bringing $250,000 each.

It's amazing the stuff people throw out in the city. I've managed to get a pretty nice mini-fridge someone put out for big junk, said it didn't work. It was worth my time to take it home and plug it in, just to check, and sure enough, it worked. Smelled awful the first couple days though. Toolbox that fit a full size truck was out for big junk as well, snatched it up in a heartbeat.
