I bought a tractor at an auction that was suposed to be a ford 8n, and it was a Satoh 620. Well the motor was shot, and when I tried to buy parts satoh waned my farm and my first born. $900.00 for a water punp,$2500 for a rebuilt carb, ect. Then I heard 1970 Mazda parts fit. Trouble is ford bought mazda and now the parts are not available. My question is is there any other motors that will fit. Some one said maybe a 20hp horizontal would fit....any ideas?

First thanks to the people who did give help. To the the rude ones my I say to my defense the auctoner said it was a ford 8n. Around here they sell for 2,000 to 3,000 dollars. I got the tractor on the opening bid. It has a front end loader and a back blade and came with a trailor. all for 800. I used the tractor for 2 years till the motor died. so for you smug e-mailers top that.

Is your REAL name Oliver Wendall Douglas?

You might try re-powering it with a rubber band.

The Mazda engine in the Satoh 650 was also used in some Yale fork lifts. MIght check with a local dealer for parts or a used motor.

Well at least you didn`t think you were buying much of a tractor to begin with. I hope your neighbors lock up their sheep before you go deer hunting this fall.

Given that an 8N Ford and a Satoh are virtually identical, your confusion is understandable. It probably didn't help that the information on the serial number tag is in Japanese, and as far as I know, Satoh may translate out to Ford.

I can only tell you what I know about the 650 Satoh. The 650 Satoh used a 1 liter (1000CC) Mazda engine. I know that the 650 was sold during 1972 and probably for several other years. I suspect that the basic engine for the 650 was the same as for the Mazda/Familia 1000. How much the various size engines will interchange, I do not know. But I have a 1980 1500CC GLC engine (for sale) with only 37K miles that will swap perfectly with the Mazda 1400CC engine. I suspect that the 1000 through the 1500 had lots of similarities.

Sato marketed the 550 and 650, also known as Beaver and Elk as the only gasoline fueled Japanese import. Both used the Mazda PB engine with the 650 governed faster. Mazda cars with that small an engine were never imported, but Hastings lists the piston rings. There are places which import used engines and transmissions from wrecked cars in Japan. I got one from Midwest Engine Sales of Cleveland (800-234-1423) for my Suzuki Samurai. They don't list your engine, but possibly a larger one could fit. I would first go to an auto parts store with an import line and see if they could help with Mazda parts.

personally I would call the junk man to see how much i can get out it and then go buy something that you can get parts for. It just might be cheaper in the long run.

Even back in the '70's, there were all kinds of "unholy alliances"- I bought my first (and last) new pickup in 1974- a Mazda B1600. My dad bought a Ford Courier pickup at about the same time, and both had the same (Mazda) engine. I don't recall that we ever devoted the necessary time to the question of which turned out to be worse.

Lanse: Ford and Mazda have some joint marketing ventures, Ford may own about 25% Mazda yet(?). Ford Probe and Mazda 626 made same factory in US, grill and emblem change. Ford 450 tow truck friend has needed trans parts- turned out to be a Mazda transmission, cost a bit. Hard telling now where cars made and designed, Chrysler has Mitsubishi engines, Chevy vega(?) and Toyota Carolla made in same California factory, Saturn is basic European Opel design, Geos have Suzuki made models. Ford model A owners getting parts made in Russia and Poland now- old Russian GAZ/GAAZ(?) was made on Ford tooling sold to Russia mid 30s. RN

Chevy Prism and Corolla are made at the NUMMI plant in Fremont California. Opel is a wholly owned division of GM, has been since 1920's. You can think of Opel as GM of europe.
