I think someone siphoned my diesel because my grandson started it fine and very shortly after, it died. I think he ran all the fuel out of the lines so that even after we added a can, it will not start. I have mislaid my manual and wonder if anyone has any tips on getting fuel to the injectors?

you must bleed air out of system, as posts below discuss. Now is the time to also replace the fuel filters - unless they're new, as you would have to air bleed the system anyways and go through similar procedure

Put some fuel in the tank and pull it around the yard until it's running.

That will not work, this is a diesel, not gas.

you may have set the stage for fuel delivery problems now. but it is easy to fix. we ran our 685 out of fuel, and within an hour on the meter (over a couple weeks between uses) it was starving for fuel. removed all the tank fittings and cleaned a lot of crud out of the shutoff and so forth; works perfectly now.

to bleed, fill the tank full or to a higher level than the injector pump, open the fuel shut off, open the bleeder screw on the (closest to fuel source) fuel filter until fuel flows out, then move on to the next filter or fitting. pretty much similar instructions on all diesels. if you have a lift pump, operate that manually for each bleeder open step.

I also have a 484. Its no big deal, but the air must be taken out of the fuel line. To do this, you need to loosen the bleeder screw on top of the fuel filter, its that little screw that requires a flathead screwdriver. loosen it, and watch the air bubbles escape and retighten the screw when pure fuel starts flowing, you start with the right hand side of the engine, and then go over to the secondary fuel filter on the left hand side of the engine and do the same. Now, just doing that will problably be all the line bleeding you will need to do and you will be able to restart the engine. try it and let me know how you turn out.

You're going to have to get fuel in the fuel filters first. You'll have to trace the line from the tank, then bleed out the air from the filters. Next, you're going to have to crack open an injector, which involves loosening the nut at one of the injectors about a half turn. Crank until you can hear it start to fire and then close the injector. Do not persist on cranking or you'll burn the starter.
