Well after finally getting 10 days in a row of good harvest weather, this is it the last 4 rows of 500 acres of corn.

Yields were some what disappointing this year but not terrible.

Averaged about 165 bu per acre straight thru.

Last year and the year before were the best ever at about a 180 average.

And how are you guys coming along on the harvest?

Gary

Those are the rows you were looking for eh Gary! We had a bit of a chop last week in the barley, still too much moisture but we did get a bit of sorghum planted. The harvest in general has been going on over here for a couple of weeks now but it will be pretty drawn out. How are prices over there?

Had the weigh-wagon out just today. 137 bpa. south central Mn. Planted way to heavy given the lack of rain July August and Sept. Got some on the other farm that is doing much better but the field was to muddy to do a test. Still cannot drive from one end of field to other. Have to poke in from the ends or cut a headland through the middle. Gets kinda frustrating.

Yeah I hate when your worst corn only makes 165 bpa. You Iowan's are spoiled a bit! Try farming some of this Indiana sand. Luck to average 130. But beans are doing good, will probably average 50 when 35 is the norm.

Can't comment on my own harvest progress, as I'm not actively farming at the moment. I will, however, share my observations of the progress that I observed while driving in eastern Nebraska today, between Omaha and Lincoln.

I would estimate this area was planted about even between beans and corn, maybe a small edge to corn. Say, about 60/40.

Most of the beans are out. I would guess 90% or greater.

A good portion of the corn is yet to be harvested. I would guess 50% or better is still in the field.

We had a run of damp weather about a week ago. Most couldn't get into the field for about 10 days. No major rains, just enough every day to keep people out.

I did notice standing water in some wheel tracks in the bottom ground.

Year ago the average was 180 bu/ac; this year 60. That's the lack of rain, it was dry from June to August with a very few showers. With insurance I didn't make expenses. My double crop soybeans, planted 6/25, poked out of the ground and stood there till August, then grew slowly. Result foot high beans, maybe I'll make expenses.

Hey did you figure out the truck?

Not yet.

Just kept adding water and antifreeze to get done.

It will get in the shop this winter and get looked at.

Finished up last Thursday. Went out with an old New Idea cut/ditioner today and cut some stalks to bale. Gonna chop some with the flail chopper and blow up in the barn when they get a little dryer.

My buddy and i have about somewhere between 10-12 acres left to pick and shell . Still need to plant 6-7 acres of barley . The past couple weeks between his daughter getting married and the rain pulled the stop . He has also been real busy butchern and not getting home till late and plum wore out.

Good deal vet.

If I remember right the last few years you have had wet harvests over there to the west.

Sounds like things went better this year.

Well Gary for the most part the last two have been dry . IF it would not have been for the wedding we would have been done . I had to go out this afternoon and grind feed for the cows and fill the hog feeder and the rain that we have had for the last week has the dust settled but thats about it . Tomarrow we are going to run some more ear corn and then i'll go dig out the old ratty Massey and clean out the cab run the grease gun around it tighten up some belts change the oil and feed it some high priced gas then go on the hunt to find the 4 row corn head , as i have no idea where Andy stuffed it . So while i am fixen and getting dirty Eugene is going to finish up the plowen .

Gary,

We got done yesterday here in Western IA. 165-170 catches most of it, you hear of some fields close to 200 bu and some 120. A lot of variables this year. Wet @ planting then dry though July and then 13-18 inches of rain since the first of August.

Rick

Gary,
I'm done except for cabbage and maybe lettuce (see my post below). I really enjoy your posts and pictures. Someday I would like to take a round in one of those big fields. Your yields sound good to me. When I used to grow a little field corn I'd been in 7th heaven if I could have gotten those numbers. BTW I liked the pictures of your combine copilot also. You're a lucky guy. Have fun, stay safe.
Phil
