I have a Ford 4600 (52 HP) and a 6 ft Bushhog brand rotary cutter, but believe I will need to get a 15 ft batwing to handle more acreage. It looks like 60-80 HP at the PTO is the minimum to operate. Any recommendations on tractor and/or brand of rotary cutter?

It would be ideal if the tractor had a front end loader also, but I assume that can be added.

IH 1586 would do it. Big old cheap tractor. $7000 should buy one. 130 hp.

EWK, First off, Here on the forums we have had the discussions waaaaay too many time on which Batwing shredder is best!
Do not get any one companys bottom of the line shredder. There is NO Substitute for Steel wt. and thickness. Most Important is HP rating on the gear boxes. Take my word here, For on this subject I AM an Expert, period. Get the highest hp gearboxes possible. We have an older Rhino SR-15M. It has 180hp divider, and 150hp main boxes. I have personally put more stuff through this old darlin than any 10 regular guys would. 10 ft cedar trees w/ 8in bases on down, Oak trees too, dead logs that would have torn up lesser shredders .
I do not care what flavor of shredder you buy, Just remember deck thickness and gearbox hp rating,
We pull this shredder of ours with a 76 JD-4230 110hp open station, 3 remotes w/ a Koyker loader. It would probable be the best shredder/loaader tractor around if it had a power shift.
Hope this helps!
Later,
John A.

Get yourself an 806 international or 856 (cheapest solution)

Either these or the 4010/4020 Deere. A 4320 will handle that 15" the best.

I don"t know anything about fords.

I pull a 15' JD 1517 batwing with a NH 7610S. Pulls good. Makes it work hard in 3'tall weeds in 5th gear but pulls good.

I know guys that pull the same mower with ford 6600 /6610's

I know a guy that has pulled a batwing with a ford 5600 or 5610.. but he was on flat ground and just clipped the black tops off horse pasture... I really think 15' batwing is too much for the 5xxx.. though perhaps a 12' or deffinately a 10'.

I pull a 10' mower on my ford 5000 and it handles it just fine.

I got my JD at a good price.. so i can't complain. I do believe the legend's series look nic (er) though..

I notice that howse finally just came out with their 15' batwing mower.. etc..

I personally like a 2615L Bush Hog pulled with a 7600/7610/7710 Ford. I've got a 7610 and a 7710 both with cab and loader. They handle it fine in pretty much all conditions. Pumps on my 7600 and 7610 without the cab are juiced a little, it does make a difference in really heavy grass.
