Back in the day what did they do to these tractors that made everything run backwards? the steering and stuff like that is easy to see, but what did they do in the engine or transmission to do it?

Answered your post on the AC board, but for those who do not read that- here is how it is done. On a WD, WD45, unbolt the rear axles, take off the diff cover, unbolt the pumpkin, flip it over, and bolt it back in. On a WC, you need to unbolt the axle from the frame to get to the gears, grind out some of the casting to make room for flipping the pumpkin. Some Fords and IH are reversed the same way. WD Tom says AC tractors were designed for that- I don't believe that- simply fortunate that the engineers made things symmetrical. Knowing engineers, it had to be an accident!

My uncle had a 1948 Farmall MV High Crop that was turned backwards with power steering. He had a sugarcane loader on this tractor, worked really good in its day. My father-in-law had a AC 190 D High Crop turned with a sugarcane loader. I have seen some that did not turn the gears and just used reverse as forward. Very hard to maneuver that way, most times they left the steering wheel in place instead of installing power steering. Then, to move from field to field they had to turn backwards and drive it like a normal tractor.

Dad was an IH mechanic in his 20s. He says in the IH tractors, they flip the whole differential carrier over inside the rear end. This procedure requires removal of both rear axles and bull gears. Major surgery.

I'm hoping to try the procedure on an old-and-dead M laying around here. Eldest brother froze and broke the block, it's been a lawn ornament for over 2 decades now.

They would take the ring gear out and put it on the other side if the diff. By flipping the ring gear that way all forward gears would then make it go backwards.
