I am in the process of restoring a 1978 Ford 4400 industrial tractor. It has been sitting in the rain for a while and water has gotten into and mixed with the transmission oil. Can anyone tell me if there is away to flush the transmission out and if so with what? Is the hydraulic fluid and the transmission oil the same? Also, where is the hydraulic fluid filter located?

you will probabaly need an owners manual for fluid and filter info. to flush the rear end out, you can use either diesel fuel or kerosene. i prefer kerosene, i use it in my parts cleaner. open the bottom drain, put a pan under it, then pour the fuel in the filler and let it run out. strain the fuel either with a paint strainer of thru a cotton rag and look and see if any metal ect comes out. do it a few times until the fuel comes out clean.

Ed, If it has just 'gotten in' it will not have mixed with the oil. It will be at the bottom. Transmission oil and water are immiscible. They will only form an emulsion if mixed intimately - like running the pump. Drain off the water by cracking open the drain plug very carefully until oil comes out. If you have an emulsion, change it and flush again as necessary.
