It's getting so I hate to turn on the news. We always used to hear about bodys found, shootings etc in south east Grand Rapids. Any more it's Montcalm County. There's been a 20 year old local guy missing since August 3rd. Cops found his body in the attic of a house last night, one block from where he was last seen. The people he associated with there moved out shortly after he came up missing. Nobody knows where they went. The place is 2 houses from the Post Office in Greenville. With the search going on,nobody bothered to report the smell. Earlier in the week,a guy out west of Stanton didn't appear in court. Sheriffs deputies went looking for him. He'd committed suicide and took his wife and nine year old son with him. Last seen alive about two and a half days earlier. Last week two hunters found the remains of a guy who'd been missing since March. Found him a quarter mile from his home. There are still a couple of people missing around here. Let's hope they went elsewhere to find work. My God,I feel like I'm living in an episode of the Sopranos. I'm trying to figure out what it all says about us. The rats and cocroaches are always the last to leave? Don't die around here unless you call somebody first and tell them where you're body will be? There aren't enough people left around here to form a search party? I'm thinking I need to buy a new lock for the door.

I got a job in Iowa in 1980 and moved before I got my house sold in Albert Lea. I rented it to a couple with 3 young kids. Thanksgiving weekend I got a call that he had killed his wife. "The devil made him do it". We had just bought a house and the wife was pregnant with our second one. Makes it difficult to sell a house with a recent murder history. Spent the last of our savings, just before we got it sold, losing on it, but able to get out from under the second house payment. Somebody killed the guy in prison several years later. Don"t have to think about meeting him in the future.

My BIL drowned his pregnant wife and toddler up in West Central Minnesota. They found him guilty of second degree murder. He had way too much life insurance on a young mother on the WIC program which got food for her and the boy. The jury decided that he had made plans to kill her before, but not that day, so it was second degree instead of first. He got out of prison in June this year and hopefully we will never see him again.
He got out in 22 1/2 years for good behavior.

rr - Yeah, I"ve been watching the same news. The guy in the marsh was only 1/4 mile from home. Told my son, if"n I don"t show up he knows which swampland to search every square foot of! Wonder how much searching was done for this guy. I don"t recall hearing when he went missing. (He was in my daughter"s class in school.) (And only about 2 miles from here!)

And that guy in Greenville, think someone dropped the ball on that one too. The family was looking in woods clear down by Ionia... Didn"t anyone have a clue where he frequented?

And the guy near Stanton, state dropped the ball on getting the kid out of that home. Why would the wife and kid take all that Tylenol PM, and not object? Apparently knocked them out with that and the gassed them with carbon monoxide. Somehow he either had a lot of power over them or something. And disciplining the older boys with a cattle prod? Neighbors say that there were things that indicated that there was a tragedy coming, and they hadn"t added up the clues - like selling off his cows, and snowmobiles. Quite a writeup in the GR Press.

It just gets worse "n worse. Watch the news for a couple more that went down over the last day or two. It"s scary around here.

I thought that one must have been pretty close to you. I'd heard he hadn't been seen since March and it was May before anybody thought twice about it.

I just last week-end finished taking a CCW class so I once again could start carrying a weapon when I felt like I needed too. I guess getting older makes me think about being able to defend ourselfs against the bad people.

I'm probably more concerned today about self defense with being crippled up than I was in my younger years. I think that's because of the shear number of people that seam to have no sence of logic on whats right or wrong and your chances of coming in contact with one of those people have greatly increased in todays world.

My $0.02 is that most people don't have enough real stress their lives. They have never had to worry about basic things like putting food on the table or keeping a roof over their head. When combined with an inactive and over-stimualated lifestyle, you get a very odd person with a strange set of values. When they realize that they are unhappy they lash out at others, and themselves, because they can't cope with reality. But as I said, that is just my 2 pennies.

I grew up way out in the country had to pipe in the sun light.
We had a big yellow house near us that no one would live in because one of the sons came home one day an killed the whole family an tossed them all down the well. when you think things are getting worse just take a good look back at what has happened in the past.
Like the guy who hung himself in the attic of his 3 story mansion on the way into town. It was years before anyone would live there, and all this in a town of 350 people.

Yeah.

And my girlfriend called last night to say that one of her students was riding her bike home from school and was hit by a truck. Killed her. 13 years old. She'll never have her first kiss, never see the world, never graduate, never get married...

Tragic when anybody dies in an accident. Even worse when it's a child..

Just think of how many are taken that no one knows about. Homeless people, people that are run aways. You see movies like "the hills have eyes" and "saw" and such. Makes you wonder, does it give sicko's ideas, or do the movies not even scratch the surface of what has, is , or will happen to some human. Disturbing.

I here ya there. The movies are just horrible as far as the killing and mutilating. Just disgusting. and to think that sane people come up with that kind of garbage. When I was a kid it was movies like Phantasm that was real gory, now tons of movies are made like this.

Last year during a rainy day on the harvest a bunch of the young guys on the crew were in the camper I stayed in, watching a gory, violent movie with plenty of foul language. I made a comment about it and the answer was "get used to it"! Jim

Well, it shows the dark side of some guys when they watch killing and rape all the time. And we Americans wonder how and why the country has sunk to the moral low that we now have.

hollywood, hollywood. They are America's royalty, can do and will do about anything. What was not allowed 30 years ago, is now G rated. When I saw Porky's I thought that was pretty dirty stuff, I was about 15 or 16. Today stuff is worse than that on public TV during after school hours. Prime time show are even worse.

Even the local news! There is a trial going on for the turture, rape and murder of a young woman going on right now. The graphic details being brought out in testimony and broadcast on the local stations just turns the stomach. They should at least give a parental warning before they report it,but no,they just bring it in to our livingrooms like it was nothing. Leaves you feeling like you were kicked in the stomach.

Yeah, rr, that case is awful old, what was it? 25 years ago? More? That was a brutal murder.

Then there's the murder in Muskegon who's about to be set free, for good behavior. He brutally murdered a woman with a pop bottle, and later escaped from jail. Yet, he's getting a pass.

How about the woman that went missing three years ago? Cops pulled har and her car out of the lake this week... Found it while looking for different drowning victim's car.

It's nothing but scarey around here.

Yea,two bodys and two cars out of the same lake in one week. That Chandler case though, the testimony that they've been broadcasting from the courtroom on the news....that just doesn't need to be broadcast. That could traumatize somebody for life just hearing that stuff. Something only the jury needs to be hearing.

We have had a couple of tragedies her. One a young women was very drunk, walked out of a party store and fell into a swamp and drowned. The second was a 14 year old kid, he was in his own house, his 14 year old buddy picked up a pistol, not knowing it was loaded, and shot the kid in the head. It was the dead kid's dad's pistol. I don't understand why he would leave a loaded pistol around ( .45 ), a 14 year old.
