I am looking at a 93 ram d350 with a 5.9 cummins. It is an automatic. Is this transmission any good?

When they get older they get to slip to the point that it don't move.Neighbour use to have all his welding equipment on one. Got to the point that it wouldn't hardly move. Had to rev the sh*t out of it to get it started. Lost speed on just about any hill. Reverse worked pretty good.Bought a 2000 Dodge to replace it. Standard

Brother has a 96, 150,000 miles on it, only used as a daily driver, the heaviest thing that it has ever pulled is a 16 ft aluminum boat, Torque converter blew apart on the inside this summer, no idea why, not a good sign on dodge automatics, I have an old dodge, I think 1985 with a straight stick in it wouldnt trade it for nothing in the world.

Pulled a 28' Montana fifth wheel and the transmission would get so hot it would slip. Truck was a 98' cummins auto with only 40K on it. Traded it in for a Dodge with the Getrag 6 speed manual.

I have a 95 with about 280K on it - pull 8.000 lb trailer a lot and am very happy with it. with the 5.9 I get about 20-21 mpg empty and around 17 mpg with the trailer.

Oh...I suppose you can find good and bad in any of them. I have a 96 with 256K on it. It's an automatic. No problems...I always hold it down until it gets ready to lock up the convertor...slack off an let it lock up and hammer down.
The throttle positioning sensor goes bad or gets dirt in it...and folks think the trans is bad. They go and get a rebuild and still the same thing. After they replace the sensor...all is well.

The bad things you here people say about Dodge from ends and transmissions are all hearsay.
My 92 Diesel has over 260,000 miles. Never had the Auto transmission out, rebuilt the front end at 200,000 mi.

I'd be more worried that the front end would fall out from underneath it.

How many miles on it?

They aren't a bad transmission. The majority of the problems come from overloading the transmissions with heavy trailer loads, not shifting out of overdrive when towing heavy, and not servicing the transmission regularly. The bands have to be adjusted, the filter changed, and quality fluid used. I have 2 1st generation diesel 4x4's, both with over 200,000 miles and both with the original transmissions in them.I tow with both of them, but they are maintained.

Second-hand experience I have with a buddy of mine. He cannot keep an automatic trans. in his 95 with a Cummins but he does tow with it. I've heard of others as well, I think the transmission and front end were the weak points of these trucks. The manual trans. they offered were only slightly better.
