We have an electric tach at work on a sprayer engine that has positive hookup to battery power, negative hookup to ground and there is a small red wire that requires 4 turns wrapped on the spark plug wire and it is very accurate when we check it with other type tachometers. It works like the induction pickup coil on a timing light.

They normally have one wire connected to ground, one wire connected to switched battery power and one wire connected to the distributor side of the coil primary winding.

If your talking about a dwell/tach test instrument, they usually only have the wires for ground and dist side of the coil primary.
