Allan, you by any chance know what the operating pressure is and what would be the max.

Friend has a Farmall SM with Charlin steering and belt drive power steering pump. The pump that was on tractor when he bought it quit so he installed new pump, now steering is irratic(spelling) and hard to steer. steering wheel jerks and jumps when turning. Also some times it is really difficult to turn wheel if you can turn it at all.

I seem to feel that the new pump is putting out way to much pessure. Thanks

Keith & Shawn

Thanks everyone for all the good info. Will get hold of him today and suggest raising front end and turning wheel from stop to stop. Also find out if maybe they reversed lines by accident. also find out what pressure his pump puts out..

John S, new after market pump.

Allan, he used an after market pump. looks simular to the one I have, which is capable of 3000 psi. Mine is a power steering pump for a forklift.

Again thanks...

Keith & Shawn

PS, Allan did you ever ask your brother if he knew the Downen's from Fairburn, SD and or the one's that live in Rapid City. Which would be Maynard and Warren third party image Warren was a well driller in his area.

OH forgot, Maynard was also County Comissoner for a while also..third party image

Keith, I have had my pump off my cockshutt 35 and completely drained to fix a leak in the seal put it back together then filled it and it worked great after one full turn to each side. The system is self bleeding so no problems should arise from that.
I would take the unit on the steering shaft apart and look into it to see if there isn't something wrong there.
They still make an sell this unit so you can get a replacement if needed, it only cost about $3500.00

Char-Lynn needs about 3 gallons per minute flow max, and a maximum of around 1000 to 1200 psi. If you give it too much pressure you can crack the torque motor case right open!

Keith: pressure wil;l be proportional to the load. The pump will not deliver any more pressure than what it takes to turn the wheel. What kind of pump didd you use? Some of those old pumps also have a filter on the inside. Why not rig up a pressure tester and check the flow while you are at it> Questions? J/

I'm with JD,

Tell him to jack the front end up off the ground to take the weight off, run that steering stop to stop about 20 times to see if there is still air in it.

Belt slipping? Perhaps something mechanical is binding and the other pump wasn't the problem after all? Bad new pump? Bad torque motor? Low on oil?

Just don't think "too much pressure" is the problem. Those little hang-on pumps don't deliver that much oil to start with.

Did he by chance happen to reverse the lines when he changed out the pump?

Dunno,

Allan
