What should be the tonnage production of Alfalfa, per cutting 1,2,3, irrigated, Columbia Basin Ea WA. I have about 10 acres I want to put in in the Spring.
Variety: 40% Ranger 40% Ladak 20% White dutch clover

Talk to Steve Fransen, the WSU Forage agronomist at Prosser. He can advise you on the correct variety and the expected yields. Tell him that Jerry from Montana sent you!

Last time I looked at any data from the Columbia basin it was 6-7 T/a in 5 cuttings. Now you can"t do that every year but that"s the potential. I don"t understandwhy you"d want to use clover in that mix.

Just my opinion, but I`d skip the clover. Every time I`ve planted a clover mix, it`s slow to dry, and ends up taking over the field....
You may have different reasons or conditions, but if you don`t have a good window for drying time, clover can be tough...BW

What is the advantage of the White Dutch clover?

I suspect it might decrease your yields, given its low growing profile.

I did a google search for "alfalfa yields columbia basin" and found all kinds of good info.

2 to 4 ton per acre depending on a lot of things. If you are going to irrigate then the tonnage will go up. Also look for that 4th cutting in the fall its the big money maker it will be mostly young shoots and lots of leaves and sells for a premium price.
Walt PS at todays prices of almost $200 per ton you can't go wrong but it takes a couple of years to get the full impact from your field.

Yeh Re: Alfalfa: What should be the Tonnage production in reply to Walt Davies, 10-11-2007 08:09:46
Yeh I know about the slow grow, I put in about an acre around the buildings for yard, this spring and it is slow. I just brush hogged that off, this year. I dont think that I can do the 4th here near Spokane as is late springs. Around Moses Lake and that area they sometimes get the 4th. More than the production I am putting the Alfalfa in for cover and land recovery. This 10 acres had been in Rye grass pasture for the last 40 years or so and the soil is depleted. The production is just a plus. I have local buyers for ALL of it when in production. I plan to leave it in till I die! ;))

Benny, if your planning on dieing soon that ain't too bad. That alfalfa is only gonna last about 7 years or so. Might want to through some grasses into it after around 5 years to keep it going.
