What a mess!!!

This corn went down in a wind storm 10 days ago.

This 40 is the worst by far.

Rest of the corn ain't to bad.

Makes for a slow prosess trying to pick it up.

At least the yield is still good.

Finished this field yesterday.

We"ve had a field or 2 like that over the years. On year it was 10 acres on river bottom. Wild cucumber grew over the tops of the corn. Then to aggrivate matters, the river levels were up which tended to turn this field into quick sand. This feild would usually yeild 200 to 220 bu. per acre that year is was about 145. We pulled the 3010 in neutral with the PTO running the picker and a gravity box with a Cat D-6. Constant battle keeping the snapping rolls clear of vines. We should have charged admission when turkey season opened though.

Gary,
I might have missed it, but when you have time could you post a few pics of that reel setup you have on you corn head. Never seen anything like that.

Did it help alot with the downed corn??

They are fairly common out here on the high plains where we have trouble with corn borers. The reel mainly keeps the trash swept off the header and keeps it from bridging up. Most folks drive them with a hydraulic motor.

Be sure and don't use sucker rod for reel tines! It tends to get brittle near the weld and you'll almost certainly wind up swallowing one when it snaps off!

wow gary, you did real good on your corn yields. our overall average was 191 bu/acre, i thought that was outstanding. you must be using some secret stuff on your crop!! how"d your beans do? we did 64 bu/acre average this year, came out of the field at 12% moisture. i was helping my neighbor over the weekend, trying to get the rest of his corn in, his was around 180 bu/acre on corn, his beans went 55, he no tilled his beans.

Gary, at least you can get into the field, here in southern Mn. we are very wet and haven't turned a wheel in a week. Hope to get back in the next day or so. Had a couple of inches of rain the last week.

I can remember 20 + years ago I had a little field corn that was down like that. I was trying to pick it with a NI #10 picker pulled with a Case 630 picker. I spent more time climbing on and off the tractor than picking. Could probably have done that 2 acres faster by hand. Your field seems a little large for hand picking though. Wasn't long after that I decided I could buy feed cheaper than raise it. Now the only corn I raise is sweet. Pays a little better but it is all hand picked. What are your yields?

This field made just over 200 bushel per acre.

Would have made 210 if I could have got it all.

Yep it would be if there were any decent fences.

And the landlord doesn't want any cattle on this farm for that reason.

Probably left 5 to ten bushel per acre in the field.
