I feel behind on chopping. had to quit with the corn since it got too muddy. almost got stuck numerous times and just decided to call it quits for that. heck i need to combine teh rest anyway. Gona top the silo off with hay tomorrow. it's gonna be cold hauling loads but i can stand it i guess. Just curious if anyone in WI is still chopping. DF in WI

We're not actively chopping, nbut we do still have 1 small field to chop yet. We planted it in about mid-June after taking 1st crop off of it.

Then the ground was so dry it didn't come up for about 3-4 weeks so it's pretty far behind. The kernals just dented in the last week or so, and the husk is still green w/out any frost damage, so it'll probably stand for another week yet atleast.

I'm not in WI but curious as to when your corn would have been planted for it to still be at a silage harvest stage . Or is it dry and you chop it anyway and add water ?

no the corn was the last i planted so it had moisture in it yet. hay can't be chopped right behind the haybine eitether. has to dry a day first.

Well... I haven't started filling silo yet. :( When it was stil dry enough to go, I was waiting for a silo repair crew, then waiting fro the repair to cure. No point in trying yet, as we have very heavy soil and got over 8" in the last 2 weeks. Last time I tried fighting the mud, it cost me a chopper hitch. Not going to do that again.
