oil from turbo

just noticed oil is weeping from connections between turbo and manifold on my Ford 9000. I expect that this means a bad seal and the turbo needs a rebuild.It is also using oil.I am wondering if the old schwitzer is worth it? how much should I expect to pay? should I replace it with a bigger one? what is a good shop to send it to? The tractor is driven only on Sundays to very gently pull the transfer sled around the jersey barriers at the end of the track.

I would investigate what Allen and Rod have suggested. If it looks like you need a new turbo, try Columbus diesel. I have seen alot of there " wind mills " on pull'in tractors, seem to be good products.

Allan made a good point there.... if it's just slobbering on the exhaust manifold make sure it isn't just from doing nothing. If the seal goes in the turbo she's going to blow a pretty good stream up the pipe and all over EVERYTHING from what I've seen. A slobberer will mostly wet the manifold/head connections on the Ford's that I've seen.
Just the same, I wouldn't chance it. Pull the intake line off the turbo. Have a look/see and check the bearings and look for oil in the intake hose towards the engine. If that's wet and the compressor wheel flopping loose in the housing, get it off there.
Dunno what it'll cost you. I'd look in the yellow pages for a good local injection/turbo shop and call them up... price around on new and rebuilt.
I'm guessing that NH will want somewhere in the neighbourhood of 2-3 grand for a turbo, and I doubt that that's an option...
Leave the size alone unless you plan on doing a lot more work to make power from it too.

Are you for sure that it isn't just wet-stackin'?

Diesels just don't do well with light-duty putzin' around.

With the way things are nowdays it may be worth rebuilding and it may be cheaper just to buy a new one, you never can tell. I won"t even attempt to give a price estimate because I"ve seen one turbo that"s twice as big as another sell new or be rebuilt for half the price of the smaller one and vice-versa, again it"s all a crap shoot. The best advice I can give would be to call the guys at Turbo Exchange and see what they say. I deal with their branch in Concord, NC all the time and their always a great bunch of guys to do business with. As far as changing sizes, etc don"t. The turbo that"s on there is sized to give the right pressure and volume of boost for that engine configuration so messing with it, especially no more than your doing with it, simply wouldn"t make sense.
