I have Perkins AD152 engine on the farm that I use NAPA air filter 2505 on. These filters are rather small and they need replacing often in the summer when it's dusty. They cost $30.00 a copy. I can buy Fram filters considerably cheaper. Does anyone have an opinion on whether the quality is comparable?

Where I work, we used Case, NAPA & Hastings air filters in our trenchers. I changed the inner filter once a year and then they were almost clean. They decided to "save money" and switched to fram. Every oil change, 100 hrs, meant new inner and outer frams. The inner was filthy at every oil change. I have refused to use fram in my own vehicles for years. I prefer a filter that actually filters. Just my opinion.

We at our company did some research on the quality of air and oil filters. We found that Wix and Perolater filtered more for about the same price as Fram. Now thats all we use. Hope this helps, John

I'm not sure how much cheaper the fram is.. but perhaps if they are say? 1/3 the price... change them at 3x the rate.. IE.. instead of 1 napa filter per year.. 3 fram filters per year.

Other good options are the prefilters.. or sediment traps.. perhaps even on a snorkel pipe. to get it up out of the dust.

Does your tractor use an inner / outter filter setup? If so... stay with a good quality inner.. and a cheaper outter and change more frequently.

I think I'd invest in an Oil anylisis now, befroe you change the fitler, and then again after switching to fram.. and make sure silicon was not going up.. if not.. go for it.

Soundguy, If a filter is clogging up, it is working. If it stays cleaner that material is getting through. I want a dirty filter. Changing a mediocre filter to a new one lets in even more material, dirty filters filter smaller particles till they collapse. JimN

The new filter should be catchine the particulate size spec'd by the manufacturer... no argument that as a filter plugs it filters better.. however.. a diesel engine is an air pump. No manny easier ways to kill it's performance than to restrict it's breathing.

I'm not sure you can do much harm to an engine by keeping it's 'proper specified ' filters clean and serviced.

If the filters are clogging that fast you ought to try a precleaner on the intake pipe, if possible. There are a couple of different types from the clear bowl to the paddle type and then several brands of each one. The ones I like best art the Centri Precleaners. Their solid stainless, so they look good, and they have a lifetime warranty. I started using them on a customers rock drills about 6 years ago. The filters they use were stopping up with rock dust way too fast. At nearly $150 per filter and one on each of 4 machines, replacing them at such short intervals just wasn't cost effective. I replaced the bowl type precleaners that were origionally on them with the Centri precleaners and it increased their filter life dramatically. An added benefit over the bowl type, that you have to empty, they require no maintenance. Install and forget, it doesn't get any easier. Another thing I like is that going on 6 years later they still look as good as the day I put them on. Granted their not "cheap" but considering the cost of the filters and the extended life you'll get, and the lack of maintenance need- vs- the others, their well worth the price.

Install an air filter restriction indicator, you maybe suprised howlong a filter can last & how much dirt it can hold--NAPA #4800 we use them at work (100+ fleet equipment) cut way down on the amount of filters we buy

Rex Hit the nail on the head. 99% of pleated air filters get changed way before the end of the use cycle.

A pleated filter works by trapping larger particles that you can see with the nekid eye thus slows down the fine particles (ones that you can't see) so they can be trapped in the pleats. The overall efficency is thus measured over both types of particle sizes.

On a diesel engine then you would not change a filter until fuel usage rises or power decreases OR a manometer measures the filters restiction amount and reprts a filter change is needed.

Changing a pleated filter before this time is just wasting money. My 4cyl gasser that's about 35k miles and my diesel is still running strong at 27k miles. The gasser dropped 5mpg when it needed changed. fuel mileage returned to normal after the change or 35mpg.

Looking at a pleated air filter is the worst way of making a good decision.

Yes there is a huge difference between OEM and Fram pleated filters. OEM will have a higer efficentcy rating and that is a true reading of pleated filter preformance.

Use the search function and read many different reports of the same info.

NAPA filters and FRAM filters are both good, but the FRAM ones are usually cheaper.

i use fram filters for most everything, with no problems, the motor/engine warrenty is not affected by useing fram filters. the company that makes fram MAY also make the napa filters, same quailty for all but you pay more for a big brand name.

is there any way you can rig up a bigger air filter and a box to put it in? Perhaps a very tall air intake stack on the engine? With a glass precleaner on top?
