Need advice on possibly seized motor

A buddy was doing me a favor and mowed some tall grass at our pond with his 22 HP Iseki diesel tractor. He said he noticed the tractor started to over heat (light on dash and steam). Thinking there was to much load on the tractor, he stopped mowing, but continued to let the tractor run to try and cool it down. After a minute or two of the light not going off, he shut the tractor off.

Upon letting the motor cool, the starter does nothing. We then hooked it up to the truck and tried to get it to turn over by dragging it around the field. We tried low range and high range gears, but it only skidded.

Obviously he is fearing the engine is seized, What is the next step? Should we spray som penetrating oil down the cylinders and try to turn it over by draggin it on asphalt?

Thanks, Chris

I have a tractor that sometimes has the starter gear contact the flwheel gear wrong and motor is stuck, until I free the starter gear. I would remove the starter anywhy and use a large screwdriver to see if tht motor will turn back wards. Doesn't sound good. Stan

If it is seized you are wasting time trying to free it. Repair it. It could be hydraulically locked if head gasket has failed. could be more serious. Don't mess around making it worse. Investigate the problem and fix it.

probably seized bearings on the crankshaft. bad news. teardown is only way to tell for sure if the other methods mentioned fail to work.

I would pull the starter first and foremost. It is rare, but sometimes a starter will not disengage when the motor starts. As the motor runs the starter gets extremely hot and melts itself together. I suppose that it is possible that the extra load of a melted starter could cause the engine to overheat. When the engine is shut off the starter is still engaged into the flywheel and is now a solid chunk of fused metal. Trying to pull start it will not work at this point because the starter acts like a very effective chock for the flywheel. It is a long shot, but if the motor is toast you will most likely have to pull the starter anyway.

Is there some way to get a big socket and breaker bar on the front of the crank? You might try to turn the engine forward and backward that way.If it's cooled though, and still won't roll, sounds like you've got some major damage.

Tear it down there is most likely a lot of things that have been ruined from the over heating. Like bearings and any thing that moved in the engine.
