This past saturday I invited my parents out to come ride in the field with my brother and I. (We work for the same farm) Me in the combine and brother Mike in the tractor/grain cart. Dad got in the combine with me first and a few minutes in he said "I wish your grandpa could see you two." Grandpa died over a year ago. We weren't really close, so I wasn't too broken up over it, but hearing him say that made me feel...different. Grandpa used to farm a long time ago, but sold out. My dad's brother still has the sale bill framed up and it makes me wish I could've been there for that. Some might call it closure I suppose, but my dad saying that about him really brought it to front and center that he can't be there watching, but he would've loved to see it. I know he's upstairs looking down, but it's not quite the same as it would be having him in the cab. The more I think about it when I'm typing, the more I need to involve my uncle on my mom's side. He lives on the east coast, so it's tough, but he's a retired farmer, too. It's amazing what one little sentence can do to a person. I know this doesn't have a lot of relevance to the forum, and it's kinda mushy, but I needed to get it off my chest and you folks understand. Thanks for reading.

I am sure he is looking down and smiling on you. I just lost my last grandpa3 years ago. He was always around as I grew up farming and building houses with him, dad and two uncles. He would come and watch the last 10 years he lived. He watched my boys break several Wild Mustangs and you could just see the pride all over him. He even bragged on the horses and I never heard him say anything good about a horse. I really miss him. I wasn't as close with my other grandpa, but he was a farmer as well.

I have the farm where my grandparents raised my Dad,my aunts and uncles. One of my Dads sisters and one of his brothers are the only ones left. I farm that uncles place too and try to stay as close to him as I can,but his health is failing fast. My Granddad passed away 3 years before I was born, but I've never heard anybody have a bad word to say about him. I still to this day hear old folks comment on how good his horses looked,or how he did OK during the depression. One old guy told me one time that Grandpa always pushed the plow as hard as the horses were pulling. Dads family was always pretty close and got together a lot. Toward the later years,I'd hear them say how I look like Grandpa,or how much I remind them of him. I'll tell ya,it can sure humble a guy to hear that about somebody that you never knew.So it's not that he ever had any influence on me to make me who I am. Just makes me darned careful not to tarnish the image of somebody that was so well thought of.

My Grandpa on my mothers side passed away before I was born. I have never even seen a picture of him. My Grandpa on my fathers side passed away when I was about 5 years old. My Dad passed away when I was 10 but I do remember when he purchased that 8N tractor and it was delivered to the house. My older brother was killed in a car wreck about two years after my father died. Stay close to them folks if they are still around.

I was close to both my Granddads, and my Dad. I will be 66 the last of Nov. and I was 25 and 27 when my Granddads died, and 44 when my Dad died. I just wished I had asked a lot of questions to both Granddads and took notes. My Mom is still alive at 91 for 3 more months. She had a little note book out a couple of years ago that my Granddad King had put daily notes in. I was reading it and on the front page he said I left home in the fall of 04 and went to live with his Brother in Law, then in the Spring of 05 went to live with his Aunt. I assume to take care of her Farm, because his Uncle died about then he must have stayed there about 5 years then He and My Grandmother bought his farm from her Uncle in 1910 they had four boys. I am the only Grandson, seven cousins one died a day after birth, but six were girls. The part of the farm I still live on was not part of it, But only 69 acres have been sold off then My Uncle the only Son still living bought 22 acres of it back.

I'm sorry about your mother. I hope her days are peaceful. I got to read grandpa's farm ledger. That was incredibly interesting. He had the purchase of a tractor and mounted picker and all the things he bought and sold. Really a treasure trove for a guy like me. Thing is, it didn't mean at all the same thing to him, but dad and I really got into it.

I guess I didn"t state that right Mom will be 92 in 3 Months, she is in pretty good shape still. She has had a pacemaker for several years, and is very deaf can only use a hearing aid in one ear. She still drives locally and in the day time. I ride with her from time to time just to see how she does and she hasn"t scared me yet.

I know the feeling.

My mom says the same thing to my brother and I about my dad. When my dad died we had 7 Olivers. We now have 26 and a big Versatile 4x4.

He always hired the corn & beans to be combined. We started doing our own with a JD 55,then a 4400,and more recently a 6600 since his death.

Ma says dad would be proud of us and I think of that often whenever I hop on a tractor to do whatever.

I know dad's smiling down at us.

Thanks for sharing. I had no idea how wise Dad was until after he passed away. All that time he was around I thought I knew everything. Turns out i was wrong.

I heard somewhere, "The older I get, the smarter my father is."

We all have missed opportunities in our lives when we wished we had done or said something and didn"t and we never got another chance. You can"t change the past but you can remember not to "miss" the things your grandfather did, with your parents, your kids and your grandkids.

Your Dad was trying to tell you how proud he was of you and your brother, and by inference, your Granddad would be also. Make sure that your parents know how much YOU think of them because they"re not likely to be around for many more years. The same with your brother(s) & sister(s) and especially your kids. Remember how powerful your Dad"s simple statement was to you. Go and do likewise.
