Price of wheat is thru the roof, so figure I'd better get it hauled to an elevator somewhere.

Trouble is, my old truck needs the sideboards put back on and also to be sealed up to make it grain tight.

Darned thing is a '50s vintage beet box and will empty both directions sideways and also out the back, so guess the use of duct tape will be extensive today.

Be just my luck as soon as I get a load pulled on the scales, the price will have dropped back down to $1.89 :>)

Not much without the sideboards on. 200-ish I'd say.

Nice part about hauling beets is that they'll "stack" into a peak and 8 ton would have easily been carried on this box.

Also, they were very handy back in the days when we had to buck spuds 'cause both sideboards will drop 180 degrees straight down.

What's the other couple red hydraulic cylinders on the other side? Sorry I don't know about these kind of beds, not too many beet boxes around in Indiana. Sure seems like a handy bed though.

The left sideboard has an electric over hydraulic opener/closer that can be run from inside the cab. That way, the wives can help drive the trucks. :>)

My dad could swing that side shut with one hand while standing on the running board. Boy, I never could; those suckers are heavy. :>(

Looking Good there guy. What about getting some real light weight angle sheet metal from freight company or heating company to lay in the corners or what about the expandable foam that you put out of the can and fills in all the little holes. Those 16' grain boxes are setting all over eastern Washington. Must have seen 100 older trucks just setting there. Most were used to haul wheat to the elevators or potato and onion harvest and the mechanics went out of the trucks but the boxes look good. BIL is just starting to make a new bed for his because he need 18' and did not find many of those. Old trucks were priced from 1500 up. By the way did you get the Hydro 70 motor redone and what did you find in there? Later Migraine

That would be a neat bed to haul round bales on. Just pull up beside where you want to dump them same as a bale dump trailer. Never know what I will see when I tap into this resource each day! Good luck with the tape job.

I know its cosmically impossible (unless you're Warren Buffet... or maybe Jimmy Buffet), but wouldn't it be cool if JUST ONCE, while you're fussing around with the duct tape and worrying about getting to the elevator, the price went UP 60 cents? Then you'd be wishing you'd used more tape, so you would have run out, and had to go to town to get more. Could've made another dime or so. But I know I'm dreamin'- those things only happen to the other guy. Who is that "other guy", anyhow, and how can I get in his Will?

Dont think your gonna see 1.89 Wt for a little wile.
These prices are wild and there seems to be no end in sight. never seen anything like it befor other that maybe back in 73
Durm wt. hit the 12 dollar mark the other day but theres very little left in the country.
Most was forward contracted for about 5 to 7 and the bushels were less than expected but the farmers still did damn good,,,And im happy for them as its been a tuff few years.
Guess the price can get as high as it wants now after theres barely any left in the country left to sell other than some seed.

Guy in town was telling me the other day that dry beans were at $31 cwt.

Was a perfect year for 'em too; hot, dry and very little rain. Wish I had a circle or two of those babies.

'Course the way my luck runs, the wind would come up in the middle of the night a blow 'em all into piles or the ditches. :>)

Hate too jump in here guys, but I was talking to my neighbor last night and he had just finished a 42 acre bean field and said the beans were too dry! Under 9! I am located in eastern Iowa, REALLY close to Davenport.

I was combining beans yesterday that never got above 9% and there were some green ones in it. It was also flirting with 70 bu./acre but I don't know how accurate the yield monitor is.

Dry edible beans. You probably know 'em as Navy beans? Soup beans? Pinto beans?

They are a real "touchy" crop. Don't like dew, damp and rain, but yet need moisture to fill. Do best on sandy soil in a hot dry climate.

Nice cash crop if ya can get it. Gettin' it is the trick. :>)

Like this one Allan.

Gonna need that cheater axle to carry the weight.

This one is a 16'x54" dad bought new in 76.

Has 32,000 miles on it.

Put the cheater on it in 2000 so we could legally fill the box to go to town.

That there is about 37,000.

I'm legal on axle weight and license to 38,000.

About 475 bu of corn and 440 bu of beans are a legal load.

DOT usually gets 1 or 2 farmers in the area every year for weight and equipment.

By the way the truck passes the new dot inspection laws as well.

I didn't think that "legal load" was in any farmer's dictionary. I know I gross out at 34-35000 on my single axle grain truck all the time during harvest and most of the time my custom harvest guys will go 105-110000.

You know how it goes, you just want to squeeze in that last little bit so you don't have to go to the elevator two more times. Glad the DOT didn't pull me over, I scaled at 41,200 with my good ole single axle C70 with a 427. 478 bu. of corn, I think I won't do that again.

Hmmm. Yes. I'm guilty of that too. I've probably run a gross of close to 80K on the back of an old FreightLiner I had. That's with a 12K front... and no trailer if ya get my drift... 30 tonne scope wouldn't push the box up.

Nice load of soybeans Gary. You must be running too already. Brother started on corn last friday and running over 200. Almost jumped on a plane Sat to come out but got a few to many irons in the fire. May still try to come though. Keep safe and get every bushel tucked away and enjoy the good prices while they last.
