I have a 1964 Ford 4000 HD Industrial. It has a 4 cylinder 172 ci. engine. It is built to be able to handle the loader (model ???)and backhoe (model 723). It has the heavy duty front end and power steering. The main frame to hold the hoe and loader are also extra heavy. It is a sweet machine that I use quite often. I have dug a septic tank, lots of trees, part of a basement, trenched for water lines, burried a horse, etc. The hoe is really strong, and very handy. Haven't had any major problems with it. Except when my grandpa gave it to me the tranny was rusted solid. The hydraulic hose fittings/ends on most Ford lines are not a normal fitting, I have recently found an adapter for them so I don't have to pay through the nose to a Ford dealer to get the special lines.

I am going to suggest a JD 310, 410, 500C or 510.

Just went thru a similar process.Needed a machine to replace a septic system, install drainage and dig footers. After looking at old tractors/backhoe setups I went with an older backhoe. The farm tractors just were not build for such use and were pretty used up in the age range your talking about.
There are some decent units available if you spend some time looking.I would suggest looking at Case 580,Ford 4500 - 555, or Massey Ferguson MF40.I went with the 580c becasue parts are plentiful, cheap and the transmission can be serviced without splitting the tractor.
You might want to avoid IH parts can be difficult to find, a transmission rebuild can cost as much as the backhoe is worth.

i picked up an old minnie moline big mo 500 combination gas tractor for 650.00 came with 2 buckets for the rear, narrow for tile work and a wider one for general use. has a few leaks here and there but not a bad unit. whatever you get, be sure the hydraulics are strong. the rear shovel should be able to lift the rear of the tractor, you need that to re-position when digging. the minnie is a little hard to get parts for, but i have a local machine shop that can fix cylinders and bushings. i prefer the gas motor, it sits a lot, and its easier for me to work on than a diesel. the only thing i dont like about the minnie is the way the rear outriggers are set up. they sit pretty low to the ground, and drag on un even ground. heres a couple pic's

Some older backhoe-loaders are just farm tractors with add-ons, whereas some others are built stronger with the backhoe/loader use in mind.
So, it depends on what you want to do. But, picking a machine that you can still get parts for is a big plus.

The Ford 801 or early 4000 Industrial - for example - is pretty light. I've had a 1963 4000 close to 40 years. 172 gas engine with a Sherman aux. trans. Handy little machine - but always breaking something - including the engine block that supports the front-loader. Nice thing is - it's small and low and gets into tight places. Also, easy to get parts for since it's basically just a farm tractor. The models with the Ford 724 loader and 723 hoe are pretty good. Others - with Sherman hoes are not. Even in the Ford Industrial line sold in the 60s - there are LD and HD versions. HD versions have much stronger front axles and also engine side-frames for loader support.

Many Deere machines from that time period are pretty strong - e.g. the 300 or 400 Industrial versions - which are 1020 and 2020 farm tractors that are beefed up to handle a loader and hoe. Then there's the 500 which is a 3020 farm tractor painted yellow with stuff added. I have no idea what the 600 is that you mention and I worked for several Deere dealers in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Something new? Or maybe a 4020 painted yellow? We never sold one. If it IS a 4020, it will be a fuel hog since backhoes spend a lot of time running a low engine speeds and light loads. Big diesels do NOT do well under those conditions. A 4020 engine is pretty efficient making 70-90 horsepower - but is a dog when only working a 10-20 horse. Most small gas engines will run more efficiently than big diesels when run at light loads - and a small diesel beats them all.
Parts availablility is good for most Deeres.

Case made some good ones as well, e.g. the 530CK or the 580CK. Parts are still mostly available. I've got a 1966 580CK and it's a very rugged machine.

Allis Chalmers, IH and others also made loader/hoes but parts are tougher to get.

If they are still running today without a bunch of leaks or loose joints neither one can have to many bad points can they?

I've got a Case 530. It's a 1960 something. 188 diesel engine. Bougjht it fairly cheap and it has worked out very well for me.
