OT - CB Radio tower

This may be slightly off topic, but since there's more practical experience on this website than any I know of, here goes.

Looking at buying a piece of property in the country. Current owner erected a CB radio tower many years ago, it is at least 100' high and maybe 120'. It hasn't been used in years, and I would view it as a liability.

It appears to be the standard triangular cross section radio tower, with lots of guy wires. I'm thinking that to take it down, I could tie onto one of the upper guy wires with a long enough cable to make sure it wouldn't hit the truck when it fell, and cut the guy wires on the other sides, and pull it down. There's plenty of room for it to fall on three sides, and plenty of pasture room to allow hooking up to it. There's a house on the fourth side, got to make sure it doesn't go that way. If the tower buckles and falls straight down, that won't hurt anything, either.

Anyone have any experieice at this? It seems to me that it should be easy to take down, but it also strikes me as the type of project where things could go bad in a hurry.

By the way, I'm curious as to how they got the thing up there. How do you erect somthing that tall? It looks sturdy enough to climb to the top, but even though I'm not bothered by heights, I sure wouldn't want to do it.

Thanks to all who replied. If I end up doing the deal, I will contact a local ham group and see if they want it. I would much rather see someone get some use from it than see it go to scrap.

Dan
Mostly good info from other responders. Used towers valued between 20-85 buck a 10 foot section, so don't just drop & destroy it. Univ Ar, Little Rock keeps a data base of all Hams in the country. There are over 100 in just the "A" listings in Houston.
Try this:

callsign.ualr.edu/callsign.shtml

Scroll down to third box, fill in city, state, or zip code. Gives name & address. Send snail mail or look up in phone book & give a call. Snail mail to one of the clubs probably give the best results for your efforts. HTH

I would contact the local Ham radio club, too. I have climbed many a tower for repairs of my antennas and rotors and even taking them down or putting them up section by section. I am a Ham and if I were in your area I would be tickled to get a tower. N4KUK

I agree with the others who think you should contact the local Ham club. If it's in usable condition someone will want it and help you take it down. The amount of work involved and the age/condition will determine what it's worth...

Sell it. Find some local communications experts and they will direct you to a buyer.

The good advice has already been given, but that tower is probably worth something to a ham operator. If you don't want it someone will come get it. You might even be able to sell it.

Towers like that in my area sell for $50-60 a section used. If you check around you can probably find some one that would buy the tower and also take it down. If its that tall it could well be worth around $500 or more, if its taken aprt the right way and not just destroyed

Dan,

Many years ago i was involved in a cb club, we regularly put up and took down towers such as you described. We used a gin pole to erect and take down the towers. It is a piece of pipe strong enough to hold up one section (usually 10' long) with a pulley at the top and clamping mechanism on the bottom, just clamp it to the top of the last section when erecting and pull up the next section of tower and mount it on top of the last, then move the gin pole up to the top of the next section and repeat the process, reverse this process to take it down. Its fairly simple, it just takes someone thats not scared of heights and has the safety equipment needed (usually a safety belt was all we used).
I would be wary of using this tower for a windmill of any type, it was built for antenna use only, if you do be sure to check out the specs. as to weight and stress the tower will take. It sounds like it would be a rohn 22 guage tower which was common for antennas.
The previous posts are right as to the local ham club being glad to have the opportunity to obtain the tower. Maybe even buy it.

Just my thoughts Randy

If it is grounded good , just leave it. It will perform as a lightening rod for the area.

A tall radio tower was dropped just across the road from my FIL house this summer. This one was guyed in three directions. They just cut one set and the other two pulled it over right between them. There is no need to pull with a truck. I would start with the high ones first so the tower doesnt buckle in the middle and the top come back at you.
If you are in a windy location why not put a 10KW wind turbine up there. The biggest cost of a wind system is the tower.

Get in contact with your local Ham Radio club, they work on towers on a regular basis. When ever a member buys a tower or moves the club members get together and move the tower or set it up. They might need a donation or a party, but they are a volunteering type or people.

Dan

Don't be too hasty to get the tower down. There are many Ham operators in your area who will be willing to help you. Should be someone who will take it down at no charge or even , perish the thought, BUY the tower from you.
I'll do some checking today, so send me an e-mail, mark subject box "tower" & I'll give you some contacts.
