Hello there - yikes - I need all the help I can get!
I just bought acreage here in Canada and a Ford 2110 Diesel 4WD came included in the real estate "package". I don't have a clue about tractors and can't get the darned thing to start. It turned over a couple of times and then it just did a bunch of "clicking" sounds so maybe the battery is dead, but I charged it for about 36 hours and it made no difference. The former owner had it running well before I bought the property, so I know the tractor works. There is no glow plug light either, but there is a button on the left side of the dash that I don't know what it is for - doesn't seem to do anything - can you tell me what it is for? Can someone please tell me what the correct steps are for starting a tractor like this? Do you have to have it in neutral and your foot on the clutch or doesn't it matter? Do you just turn the key to start it or is there also a starter "button" after turning the key on?
Since there is no glow plug light, how long do I wait after turning the key to start it? Should I buy a new battery or maybe borrow one from a farmer friend - maybe the battery isn't the problem???
Thanks for all your assistance,
Marion

To start ,pull throl lever a 1/4 down . Turn key to left and hold for 15, 20 sec for glow plugs. turn key then to right.

I have a 1720, so things likely will be different.....

Number one: BUY A MANUAL. They are pretty cheap from NH, can look them up & even order on-line if you want to. You NEED one.

My newer model the key is on the right, turn key backwards (top to you) and glow plug light comes on, wait 4-7 seconds, then turn key forward to start, release key. (My older bigger Fords the key positions are: off, acc, run, glowplug, start..... - extra notch in there for glowplug)

If your model is manual fuel pump, not electric, then there will be a knob (often red, but can be other colors) that pulls out/ pushes in. This is the fuel shut off switch. Diesels can run without any electricity, so turning the key off has no effect on manual fuel pump models. You need to shut the flow off with the slide knob. In is typically on, out is typically off.

Sounds like your battery is shot, buy a new one. Ford tractors use huge batteries, replace with what it needs. Might start in hot weather with smaller one, but when it is cold, you need the big one. Get the right one.

Could be bad connection or starter gone bad too tho, never 100% sure of the problem with so little info..... Me I clean the posts, hook up the 100 amp jump charger, see if that works, then can figure out where the problem is from there.

Remember - buy a manual.

Wait until you run out of fuel - no go until you bleed out the injector lines.... You need the manual to get through all these things.

You will want it to start not just now but when it's very cold. Sounds to me like you need a new battery and you'll need a DIESEL battery. I suggest buying the best Group 31 battery you can get for a cold-natured tractor like the Shibaura-built 2110. Last one I bought was 31HD-E I think. The starter switch should have a spring-loaded position for glow plug heating; probably turn counter-clockwise to heat them, then clockwise to crank the engine. No flammable vapors ever in the intake! Glow plug indicator may be a wire element inside a hole in the dash. That's supposed to give you an idea how hot the glow plugs are. As another post indicates, be sure to get an operators manual, read it from cover to cover and follow it religiously. Some of us who have spent our lives with tractors get hurt and die because we get careless, but people who think they'll be fine with a tractor because they can drive a car..... .well, enough said. We want you to be around a long time to share the good times with us.

I don't know anything about your specific model of tractor but it sounds like the battery terminals need to be cleaned and the battery charged. If it doesn't want to take a charge it maybe shot and you'll have to get a new one. You can have it checked out at an auto part store.

The next thing you need to do is to get a owners manual for your tractor to tell you how to operate it. If you have NH dealer near by he might be able to get you one. Or get on ebay, Business & Agriculture, and see if you can find a manual. Look at the Parts folks on the left of this page and see if they have one. It'll tell you all you need to know about operating your tractor SAFELY!
Hope this helps.

Not familiar with your tractor but if it has a simms injector pump there's a cold start button located at the axes of the kill lever. Just push it.
