Pulled the valve cover on an old MF 202 I picked up. The top suface of the valve cover was all gunked up with a gel like mess but the valve assembly didn't look too bad. Suspect there's lots of stuff in other locations. Thought 5 Min Motor Flush would be a good idea?

You guys have any thoughts/cautions on using 5 Minute Motor Flush or similar?

I really wouldn't do anything to it. If you got plenty of time and money then break the engine down and clean it properly and make a decision on rebuild. Other wise a cheap flush will just keep you guessing and will cost you more $ later on.

On a tractor with a known issue I'd pull the valve cover, oil pan and inspection plate and go to town with carb cleaner.

If you change oil on a regular basis and just want some peace of mind I'd use the flush. Just make sure you use a some stop leak when you refill the pan. The solvents in the flush will dry out seals, the stop leak (I use Eagle) will keep them soft.

I used the stuff in a 6 cylinder gas with a ticking hydraulic lifter and it cured the problem. Knowing how it really does loosen up the crud I wonder about using it in a really gunked up engine as it may loosen chunks and then cause a plugged lubrication system or some contaminant ending up in a bearing. When tetraethyl lead was used in gas it caused the lead to collect up on top in the cylinder heads in the form of gray gunk. Oil pans can collect an unbelievable amount of muck and I sure wouldn't want that to get into the oil lube circulating system. You may want to mechanically clean out the pan and the top end with a rag and brush before using it to clean the rest of the system.

I would recommend against it. The flush (if it works) will break things loose and cause them to go through all the oil passages and perhaps plug them up.

Personally, I would remove the side cover and oil pan as well and clean them out... also scrape anything you can out of the block - even use a solvent and air gun to clean things out and let them fall to a piece of cardboard under the engine or a pan.

Re-assemble and fill with a good quality oil and change it within a few hours of operating a couple of times and call it good. That"s my $0.02 worth.
