Cub Cadet Kohler 12 HP compression

I have a Cub Cadet 123 with a 12 hp Kohler cast iron motor. ANybody know what the compression should be? I am reading 40 psi wet or dry.

If I remember right the compression release is activated when the throttle is all the way back in idle position on 12Hp cadets . Shove the throttle up and see what reading you get.

Mathew,
Have 10 horse Kohler in my JD, shop book says operating range 110-120# comp, rebuild if below 90#.
Started burning excess oil & power loss this summer. Best comp test showed 50#, so pulled engine this week. If can get another 36 years service I'll be satisfied.

To get a decent compression test you have to rotate the engine backwards so the compression release is not lifting the exhaust valve and releasing some compression during cranking.
Buy a cylinder leak-down tester; it is much more useful than a compression tester especially on small engines. I have used one for years with great results.
