Delco Remy starter rebuild

I"m rebuilding an old Suburban starter and have a question. After removing the two long bolts I can"t seem to pull the back plate off. Gently tugging on the end cap moves it back a half inch but no further. The only other screws on the case are two large flat screws.

The Old Ford Mechanic is telling you the way it is.

Nice part about that starter is that they can be overhauled for a little of nothing.

Replace the starter drive while you're in there, disassemble, clean and reverse the contact washer in the solenoid, replace the drive end bushing (cut the tip of the nose off with a hacksaw to access), replace your brushes as you are doing and don't forget to put in a new leather washer under the new end plate.

Presto! You've got a new starter at 1/4 the cost of a rebuilt.

The end plate on the Delco starter does not have any brush holders attached to it.Dissasemble it in this order.First remove the solonoid switch from the top.Then remove the 2 long bolts that run through the case.Then take a small hammer and tap the drive housing also called the starter"nose'.One light tap should seperate it from the armature housing.Remove it and the tap the end of the armature shaft with a soft peice of wood "such as a 2x4 block" to seperate the end plate from the housing.Then remove the armature shaft and end plate from the housing and,then just slip the plate off the shaft.Be sure to replace both shaft bushing's with your rebuild.

It is a 1971 SS12. I finally got it apart. the bearing was snuggled up in the end cap.

The little metal blocks that came in my repair kit were a little thinner than what I replaced. The ones I took out were worn down about halfway through, but I'm not sure if that would have made any difference. I cleaned the inside with brake cleaner & wiped it down as good as I could.

I hope replacing the little metal pads will help the engine turn over a little easier now.

Those little metal pads are the brushes.Also the bearing you speak of is really a bronze bushing.That starter has 2.One in the end plate and one in the drive nose.They should be replaced as they can affect the performance and the life of the starter and the flywheel on the vehicle.A loose bushing will allow the starter drive to misalign with the flywheel causing damage to both the starter drive and the flywheel.If your cranking does not improve after the starter work check the engine timing with a light.Make sure it is set correctly.Years and milage have a way of wearing componets such as timing gears and chains and causing cranking trouble.Also check your battery cables and clamps very throughly,I've seen corrosion inside the insulation from one end to other in a cable before.

The back plate contains the starter brushes and pulling or prying can damage them.Been a while since I worked on them but should be able to remove the band around the rear housing an d remove the brushes froum plate, if my memory is still working..... ..... .

goto be the wires from the brushes to the field and to the terminal sticking ont onthe side.
the armerture shuld pullont the shaft end also
