I think I found a great deal - but I'm not sure

I am new here and registered specifically to ask this question. Any help is greatly apprciated.

I may have an opportunity to buy a JD 630. The serial is 6311414 which I believe makes this model a 1959. It's a LP tractor with 3pt and runs well. It seems (from reading other post on here) that this tractor is relatively clean. There is no sigificant rust and most everything runs great with the exception of the altenator (sp?) which seems as if it would be a quick fix.

What would be a fair offer for this machine?

Thank you.

Allen, you've made my day. I really get a kick outa you. I can tell when you havin' a good day (sometimes). I hope someone will let me know if you're ever on Jay Leno ( I quite watching it years ago) but would stay up to see you. 'specially if you waz to talk about oil, staples in fences and green paint. As we say down here "Boy, you're a pistol"

TexBill, first off JD 630 LP's or any JD LP's aren't rare as stated at least not in the southern states. I think in Texas a "nice" running un-restored 630 LP, 3pt,PS.live pto tractor will bring between $3000 and $4500. If it had a factory square wide frt. axle a little more. "Everybody has an opinion." So what I am reading from this post is that I really don't have much of a chance of ever affording my uncles 630 LP that I ran as a kid. Life was better before I knew.

LP is between rare and uncommon. Not many were ever made, so as a collectible it may bring a considerable premium over the most common gas 630. That number wasn't made for over a couple years, but the mechanics were the same as the previous 620. All 2 cylinder's were replaced by the new generation tractors in 1960.

Fueling an LP tractor is a greater bother than fueling a gas or diesel tractor but your fuel won't be stolen from your bulk tank (which needs a liquid tap to fuel the tractor) and the LP engine runs very clean and today quite inexpensively with farm LP costing $1.44 a gallon though it will use a bit more LP than the gas tractor would have doing the same work. LP engines also last a long time because the fuel doesn't wash oil off they cylinder walls or dilute the crankcase oil.

If you get it for the price of a similar gas tractor, you've stolen it.

Not arguing that they aren't fine tractors. They are.

But, those John Deeres are tagged so far out from reality, it isn't even funny.

Like Mr Bob says, you can buy a 150 horse, air conditioned, cabbed, radioed tractor any day of the week for the same darned money.

Any two lunger priced at over $2500 is selling you nothing but already dried green paint.

It's way cheaper in the pail.

Why not go for a 45-50 hp MF 65, less money, better tractor?

Had a 50 and 65. Both were pure junk. The 35 and 135 are good. Hydraulic trouble all the time with the 50 and 65.

The 65 was an excellent tractor in my experience. I guess there's good ones and bad ones in all makes and models.

TexBill,
I think the value would depend on your area. someone else can probably get you alot closer on price than I can. One thing to remember though is the tires. If the rubber is worn or badly cracked, or if it`s had fluid in and the rear rims are really rusted around the valve stems, you could have alot in expense. Rear tires are gonna run around $400-$500 apiece and rims are probably around $200.
Just something to think on. BW
