What do you think about a NI 323 corn picker?

My recent trip to the Half-Century of Progress show has sparked my interest in getting a corn picker. One of my Grandpa's friends that was working there had his Unstyled JD A with a 1-row New Idea corn picker. (steel wheels and work clothes, if you saw that one there) I have a 1937 JD A and the 323 NI 1-row seems to be avaiable in my area. What are your opinions on this machine? Does it have any hydraulic functions? Is it likely that the 323 was the model that I saw working at the show? It seemed to work pretty smoothly and match the A well.

Thanks

Does it require any hydraulics? Thats an issue for me because my tractor doesn't have any.

Some 323's don't require hydraulics. They use a hand lever for lifting the snouts. The hydraulic cylinder lift kit was optional equipment.

They do,but you could just put a screw jack in in place if the cylinder. Once you are in the field picking, there really isn't any need for adjustment.

They are a good little picker. I use a 325 two row. The only thing with a 323,I've only seen one that didn't have the inside snout bent. They would catch the tractor tire when you turned too short. Tongue needed to be a little longer on them.

Agree with what George said on the implement side and also that mentioned below. Shelling can be minimized by picking above 20% (most recommend 25 to 30% but you better have a crib with good airflow) and set the snapping rolls tight

The 323 is as good a picker as anyone would need to play with there is alot of them around and they hold up good. If you cant stand the way they shell the bottom row off the cob you'll have to buy a 234 mounted IHC picker or a JD 300 pull type that takes the same heads as the combines.
