Good Evening Fella"s,

I got an ol" 041 stihl chainsaw. I have never really had any major problems with it. I go to fire her up, and holy begezzers, she takes 3 men and dog to pull it over. It has sat idle for most of the summer.

So, is a valve stuck? does this one have type of decompression valve, that may be sticking? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Hound

I had a 041 - I would check the compression relese it may be plugged with carbon.

What model 041 do you have with a compression release? I've never seen one - not even on the 041 Supers and have been working on them since the 1960s. The 051 had it though.

What the other posters told you about the bar-oilpump is right on. It's not a simple gasket that you can make though, it's a special molded piece.

We had that problem with all the 040s, 041s, 050s, 051s, and 075 since late 1960s. The 020s, 030s, S10s, 08Ss, etc. didn't have the problem since they used a totally different pump.

To fix, you remove the internal snap-ring, put a metric screw into the tapped hole of the oil pump - and pull out. The screw is the same as the ones that hold your pull-starter assembly on.

I'm curious if Stihl still sells the parts. If you get stuck, I've probably got a box full of them somewhere. Stihl part number 1110 647 9000

...pats on the back for Ross. I went out to the garage and pulled the spark plug and presto-oil, oil and more oil.

Just left it sitting upright, I'll let it drain out tonight and flush it out, in the morning as suggested.

Thanks.
Hound

Local guy whose sold Stihls since the 70's and has run a sawmill with his dad from at least the 50's told me there's a gasket between the oiler and crankcase that goes bad on that series 041, 051 and I can't remember which else. Anyways, he told me he could fix or I can just empty the bar oil when I'm done. I'll get it out to him one of these days, probably next summer when I won't need it so much.

I've got a 041 Farmboss and had this exact same problem. It was bar oil leaked past the oiler gear and got in the cylinder which hydrolocked the piston. I flushed it out with 2 stroke gas and it worked fine. I just empty out the bar oiler reservoir when I'm done. Boy did it smoke when I first fired it up with the bar oil in the cylinder! I ran it all day with no problems afterwards though.

Is there a vent on the cap for the bar oil that is plugged? It could build up pressure forcing it into places it shouldn't go.
