Best saw I ever owned was a Husky 268 with a 24" bar. Still run it after 10 years now. No problems. Paid $300 for it at a pawn shop. Only aggravating thing about it is when I pinch the blade and then jerk the saw to free it, the throttle linkage separates, necessitating the removal of the plastic top cover to reconnect the linkage. So I try to not pinch the bar. But it runs as good as new.

I agree with below-lot's of good saws these days. Husky, Still or Echo are on my list of good saws. I have a twelve year old Stihl 025 thats gone through half dozen bars, many sprockets. No problems other than the wear parts. Starts on exactly the third pull and runs all day. I vote for Stihl.

Go with what you have dealers for in your area. It a ford-chevy debate. I agree with the man who said buy a comercial saw not a walmart/homeowner one. Many places sell saws and parts on line too. I have a 350 husqy, good saw. Alot of the other brands are very good solo dolmar deere/efco but again make sure there is a dealer around.

I have a 4 year old ms290 stihl. Have replaced the fuel line twice. Once every two years. Dealer says it's the gas. I asked if he had proof. No answer. I also told him I have a 22 year old Sachs Dolmar 120 super that the fuel lines have never been change and run the same gas in both saws. The fuel line cracks where it bends coming out of the fuel tank to the carb. One more gas line and I won't buy another Stihl. I'll get another Dolmar.

Stihl. As good as any, better than most. They hold up to hard use and/or abuse. My personal favorite is the MS260. GREAT multi-purpose saw.

Stihl all the way. It is true the Husky will rev a bit faster, but will not last as long as the Stihl. I use both and this has held true with every one. Also had a couple of those Echo's and either will eat one of those.

They're both good. We run Stihl here...largely because of the dealer. They have their problems like anything else, but I wouldn't really consider anything else to be honest. We've had an 041 and 034 and still have a 38 Super, 044 and an MS361. The 38 is a heavy, indestructable old saw. The 44 is a good saw. The 361 is a nice light fast saw with good power. It's the pro saw the 034 never was....
In my opinion you should stay with a pro series saw no matter what color you buy. The home owner series stuff isn't all that good.

Husky---faster--lighter--more powerful for the same size saw.

I was a diehard Stihl man for 20 years, worked for a guy that logged with them (044 was my favorite), owned them, even was engaged to a gal who's pa was a dealer. Stihl was secong to none. Then I got chance to use a Husky, Now Stihl is 2nd only to Husky. Both good saws.

In 1998 I bought a Stihl Farm boss 029 with a 18" bar. After the motor bogged down due to the restrictor plate on the exhaust it ran great. This saw has cut down and logged up countless hard wood trees, still runs good. I have thought that when my Farm boss dies I will likely get a Sthil trim saw, 16" (I dont cut down the big ones anymore--dont have to. My neighbors have Huskys and they work real good. I saw a guy 3 years ago with a brand new Stihl with 24" bar, holy *rap that saw was big and $500 too. He just bought it new from the local stihl dealer in town and I watched him cut up huge oak logs with ease right after the road commision cut down a bunch of trees that were blocking the power lines.

I look after 23 thousand acres of state forest land and we have been using Stihl saws for many years and exclusively for 8 years and have had few problems. The smallest saw we run is an 026, otherwise we have two 036's, two 046's with heated handles and an 066 with 24 and 36 inch bar.(personally, I like the 066 better...it runs out of fuel faster than the others!) I think it comes down to personal preference, the crew here happens to like the Stihl saws, but the Husquevarna's are also an excellent saw. I am not sure if Stihl still makes the QS series of saws, but that was one we never had good luck with (QS = quick stop) Buy either saw, you won't be disappointed. I would recommend buying a saw that has a good dealer nearby and won't be out of business the day after you buy the saw or some such thing. Cal

Forget them both, and get you a Echo, and never look back. Much higher quality. Tom

The only places i ever see selling Echo equipment is the big box stores, never a place that services what they sell.

With that said, I'll never buy any small engine powered equipment from a place like that. The Echo's I have seen were a joke compared to a Stihl or Husky of the same age.

Look around, I know of a couple local Echo dealers in my area that will service their product, we have very good luck with both the saws and string trimmers. Echo used to make John Deere stuff until they found someone else that could make them cheaper in the mid 90's. They also make the engine for the Mantis tiller.

They are a good unit, alot better than diehard followers of another brand would like to admit.

We do have a mantis tiller that you mention them. It's a good unit too. I have looked around, but most places only sell and service Stihl or Husky from what I've seen.

Dunno where you are at but according to the dealer locator most dealers are only in the middle of Wisconsin.

I'm in kinda the north-east central part of the state. I'm sure there's probably a dealer within 5 mniles I've never heard of that sells and services Echo, but I've never seen 'em because I never look for an Echo delaer. We've got a Stihl chainsaw and weedeater, and they're both good machines. Had the Chainsaw for what has to be atleast 17 years now, and the weadeater for probably 12 or more.

My $.02 only. I was very disappointed with my Stihl. I used as you describe. About a cord and a half of wood a year and some yard and garden pruning. Kept clean and sharp. Adjuster screw broke (plastic)- steel replacement part $17. Carb would not stay on setting and assorted nuisances. Never used anything but name brand gas and Stihl oil. I think it was a 240. I don"t have it around because I threw it across the counter at the dealer repair shop finally. My friend has one that is the most abused tool I"ve seen. Cranks and runs perfectly. His may be a 270. I think they are over priced and over rated for casual use. My new tack is a mid-sized Poulan from Wal-Mart. When it has irritated you enough, just toss it and buy another. Cheap. Trouble is, my last Poulan won"t quit, just has gotten tempermental to start and I am living with it for a while longer. Never owned a Husky, just a McCullogh that was too small for some of my cutting once I bought the old farm.

Don't know the models but I bought a well used Stihl at an auction about ten years ago and it has never failed to do the job in all those years.
