My Chilton manual shows it as being a 1946 Studebaker Skyway Champion "6" Model 5G.

I think you're right, 46. The earlier models appear to have had the grill less forward, so the top piece is smaller.

Looks like Nolan"s right; per the Stude site pix that"s definitely a 46 bumper. Looks like they put a few early ones together out of leftover parts, or just used what the vendors already had the designs for. After WWII people were so glad to get cars they didn"t care what they were, and everyone was rushing back into prod to get the biggest share of the market they could.

42 Champion looks about right; the dull grille was after chrome was held for the war effort, and the 41 grilles were quite different. Per the two pix in Std Cat Am"cn Cars 1805-42, the Champion (poor pic) doesn"t appear to have parking lights at the grille ends, while the Commander, and probably the President, do (better pic). Don"t recall if they pushed any out after WWII before going to the Leowy design, but if so they would"ve been chromed. Sez 29,678 Champions prod before prod stopped, but no breakdown of eight Champion models; can send serial # info if needed.
