I am moving up from a 1/2 to to a 3/4 pickup either new or slightly used. I will be putting a slide in camper in the bed and pulling a 3000lb tractor behind it. Any suggestions on which trucks hold up the best, Chevy, Ford or Chrysler. Are there any particular problems I should be aware of on used 2000 and newer trucks. I have heard that some of the Ford diesel trucks had some engine issues and I have noticed that some of the used Dodge trucks already have new transmissions in them. Any advice would be appreciated. Also is the extra expense worth it for a diesel engine.

From what you have written I personally think you should consider a 1 ton truck. With a camper and a tractor may be to much for a 3/4 ton, no matter what truck you buy think diesel with tow package and with trailer brake package. No matter what it will be pricey. The differance in 3/4 and 1ton is not as much as you might think. Just something else to consider. Regards John

I buy a new pickup about every 5 years or so - when my tax lady tells me to. I buy 3/4 ton 4x4.
Drove Fords for years. But when they came out with the current style pickup I had to go over to Chevy. Ford tail gate is at least 3" higher than the Chevy.
Height might be good if you are looking for a better view from the seat. But if you are constantly loading lumber, plywood, sheetrock, tools and equipment that extra 3" is a killer.
Chevy is the lowest platform of them all.

I think they are all about the same. A 3,000lb tractor on a bumper pull trailer is nothing for a 1/2 ton, but I don't know much about slide in campers, but don't seem like those would be too heavy for a 1/2 ton even with the trailer behind. With 3/4 ton your going to lose alot of ride quality when your crusing around empty, you'll feel all the bumps and potholes in the road much better. My dad just went from a 1994 F150 with a 300 straight 6 to a 1994 F250 with a 351. Both were 4x4 and 8ft box except the F250 is an extended cab instead of a regular, and the F250 is automatic where as his F150 was a 5spd. He lost 6mpg going to that F250. His F250 is a much better truck for heavy hauling, but only averages 12mpg compaired to the 18mpg he got with his F150. The 3/4 ton is built heavier all over, his F250 weighs in at 6,000lbs empty. It is not an economical truck just to go out riding in or use for anything other than heavy loads. Ask yourself if you really need a 3/4 ton?.

I have never had a slide in camper, only bumper hitch, but I have seen way too many people on the road trying to use a slide in camper on half ton trucks and the back of truck would be draging the ground with the front wheels about bouncing along with no control over the truck. They should be outlawed on half ton for peoples safty. You need a minimum of a 3/4 ton or even a 1 ton for safty. Those campers are a lot heavier than people think and then most hang over the back of the bed for 3' to tip the truck that much more. Those campers are as heavy a body as the camper bodys that are put on the dual wheel 1 ton truck chassies. Father-in-law had one, 12' body on 1 ton Dodge and that thing was so heavy a standard jack would not lift the back to change a tire. For that camper and pulling a trailer look for not a 3/4 ton but a full 1 ton truck. You want control and a 3/4 ton with standard supencion will not give you that and a trailer will only make things worse. Keep yourself and others on the road safe and go with a 1 ton and an extended cab with longer wheelbase than standard cab will also give better control.

I love my 96 f250. I average 19mpg which I think is great considering it is 4x4 and 4:10 gears. I drive it like i stole it to :) considering the 50 grand price of a new one, i'll probably keep mine until they quit making parts for it.

I've got a '03 Dodge 2500 4X4 QC Turbo Cummins/auto, an '04 Dodge 2500 4X4 QC Hemi/auto, and my son has an '04 Dodge 2500 4X4 reg cab Turbo Cummins/auto. Both the diesels get 21+mpg empty and 14/15 pulling loaded trailers. Hemi gets 15+ empty, 10-12 towing. All 3 are excellent trucks.

I've owned Fords, Chevy's GMC's, and even Toyotas. I've had as good, and in most cases, BETTER luck with the Dodges than any brand. Toyota Tundra was a good truck, just too light for heavy towing IMHO.

All brands make good ones and they all make their share of lemons.

Just one thing if you are going to add a slide in camper then stay away from 4 wheel drives as they are way to high off the ground to be safe in a wind or when loading and unloading the camper. Other than that diesel is best for what you want just get one that you like not what someone else likes.

I won't comment on which brand to buy other than to say that NO truck is any better than the service you can get from the dealer where you bought it, and also be aware that not all 3/4 ton trucks are equipped the same way. There are options such as heavier axles, springs, towing packages, etc. Make sure the truck you are looking at is equipped to do what you want it to.

Dunno Hank, guess it depends on what you'll use it for.

I had an '01 7.3 Power Stroke and thought the sun rose and set with that old truck. Traded it off at 107K miles, not one lick of trouble except one starter. I beat the He!! out of 'em too and this truck never even had a rattle when it left here.

So, I go to town and trade it off on an '08 Super Duty. Drove it for three weeks and promptly parked it in the garage. Couldn't stand those $100 fuel bills every third day. Best I've ever seen on it was 17mpg. :>(

But, Oh Mama! It is a total maniac when it comes to towing the big trailers. It’ll pull the cleats right off a D8 Cat. :>)

They say the Dodge Cummins gets good mileage and I think those Chevy drivetrains are pretty tough anymore. Their Duramax tonner is a darned good lookin' rig too.

We have a 1990 F250 4WD with a 7.3 has over 300,000 miles on it, have added a Banks turbo on it, also have a 2000 F250 with a 7.3 PS, love it, only widh it were a dually instead of a SRW, it pull about 12,000 at times and it gets a little squirrelly at times.

You'll probably get a lot of replies. People are as opinionated on trucks as colors of tractors, maybe more. I personally think that every brand has their ups and downs. I've had chevys, fords and a dodge, I personally prefer Ford they hold up better for me. I've had a 6.9 and a 7.3 diesel ford with good luck, I don't know about the newer diesels. I've got a neighbor that has always been a chevy man, he bought 2 duramax diesels and kept them about a year. Now he has ford diesels (6.0). He claimed he couldn't keep fuel in them. I've had 2 dodges, my first and last. But it probably was just a lemon. I know some who have had very good luck with them.

I have a 2002 Dodge with diesel and a six speed manual. I think it's a great truck and get 20-21 MPG running empty. I bought it intending to pull a fifth wheel but changed my mind so now I just enjoy driving it. I suspect any transmission problems may have been automatics.

My BIL has had 3 Dodge trucks and none of those ever got over 14 or 15 MPG. Good trucks, but he can't get the milage my 96 F-350 gets. Since new it has gotten 21 MPG as long as you keep that gooseneck off it. 240,000 mile and had one set of front brake pads and a water pump.

If you are going to be towing and traving much then I think a diesel will be the way to go. I have a gas truck 1996 dodge ram and it has been very good to me. Lately I have been having more and more troubles when pulling the trailer finding a place you can pull in and get gas. They all seem to be placing the gas pumps so you pull in facing their building not giving the room to manuver a truck and trailer around. The diesel pumps are usually located off to the side where you have room to drive around. This factor alone is enough to warrant a diesel. The cummins in the Dodge is the tops so far. If you go gas you may want to check out the new Toyota's and see if they are rated for what you need to haul. Their older trucks were too small for me .But Dad has one and it just goes on forever trouble free !
