Man, are they thick!! I work at a church camp smack dab in the middle of 170 acres of woods and they are relentless out there! All the moisture and warmth has got them strong and hungry. I can't work in the shop without spraying a bunch of insect fog, and that only works for a half an hour or so. Gives me reason to stay in the office more and cruise ytmag. Anyone else being eaten alive? I've probably had 30 bites in the last 3 days.

You know? I heard this AM on the radio news that the mosquitos popping up now are "NOT the sickly ones that carry west nile virus, just everyday old mosquitos". And the first thought through my thick skull was, "How the heck do these guys know if they're capable of carrying west nile or not?". Why couldn't or wouldn't they? I'm not saying that they are or aren't, but why couldn't they? West nile seasonal and we're past the season? Like you, I wouldn't bet on it either.

Mosquitos in north central Indiana on the Michigan border are brutal. Last weekend out by the woods were brutal, except when on the tractor. After shutdown the tractor...dive bombed me mercilessly. I made it back to the house covered with welts and everyone asked what happened to me. Mosquitos by the woods...brutal. They didn't believe me. I'm out of town this week and call home every night and they say that near the house are brutal now. Let the dogs out, when they come back to the house minutes later are covered. Thank God for heartworm preventitive. Up until last weekend my lab was lethargic and nearly drank himself to death, slept a lot, totally out of it. Vet put him on antibiotics, and a couple of days later his old self again. Maybe he had it? Don't know.

Hope you're feeling better, and hope I or no one that I know never gets it.

This will sound funny but the best Mosquito repellant that I have ever used is Shaklee's Basic "H" its there liquid soap you mix some in water and spray it all around the place where you are and on you and "NOoo Mosquitos" "No smell either"

For bug bites my Doctor told me to take two B50 vitamin pills per day, one in the morning and one at night. Claimed it makes you smell bad to bugs.

No bugs have bitten me since, so I guess it works, as long as you don't mind glow-in-the-dark urine.

Here in Southern Michigan we had a break with the drought this summer until the monsoon hit four weeks ago. 14" of rain in 2-1/2 weeks, now the little buggers are all hatched out and hungry. I even passed up a drink this evening on my neighbors deck, that's how bad it is.

I think they were a little more abundant in the last few years with all the rain '04, '05, '06, but still somewhat tolerable, this year it's been dry, usually only have to deal with em after dark, dusk and or dawn. For some reason I don't seem to react to the bite, unless I itch the heck out of it, usually forget about them, still hate them just the same. Apparently it's an allergic reaction to their saliva that makes one itch and the bite swell. Also, I think they hone in on carbon dioxide, like when you exhale, supposed to have an ability to detect it a long ways, could be wrong though.

I have seen them come out of heavily irrigated lush grass lawns though, heavy concentrations of them, during daylight hours.

We have a 20 something acre pond that was once mostly marsh, in the 70's we had those electric bug zappers, we were a dealer of them, and when that area was more of a marsh, they were a lot more significant, beaver dam took care of that, state road is on one side so they put sheet piling in and can control the level now, open water, creek fed, think it made a big difference in the mosquito population.

The ones I cannot deal with are those gnats, black flies or whatever they are, it's been a great dry summer, and even with below zero with no snow last winter, they were late this year, but sometimes you have to wear a no see um net, which is a pain when sweating from hard work, other wise they get in your eyes, ears and nose, also bite hard but don't leave a mark. These are by far worse than mosquitos, but they don't like the direct sun, usually safe when it's sunny, but if warm and cloudy, forget it, they can shut you down quick, they also seem to flock to the LPG powered tractor, I think it's the odor in the fuel, before or after it's burned, who knows, they swarm the tractor sometimes. Those flies that circle your head came and went, just put your hand on your head, wait til it lands, lower your hand slowly and swat, I can deal with them, but they always get you when your hands are full,

Annoying Insect 101 in NY LOL !

I've been putting the roof on my new pole barn with one hand, swatting mosquitoes with the other. Seriously, this is the worst I've ever seen them. I had to fog my garage last night before I could go out there to change a plug on my wife's 4 wheeler.

What is bad here in Michigan, at least my area is the paper wasps and bees, every week I am using brake cleaner to kill some of them off.

Only 30 bites. Shoot right now I can't go out and check eggs with out at least that many. But with the 3 ponds I have and the creek theres a lot of places for them to come from. Plus in the last few weeks we have had 12-15 inches of rain which also doesn't help

When I went out to the farm the other day, two of then were chasing a horse around. When I came back they had killed and eaten him and were piching horse shoes to see who got to chew on the bones.

We have a few here in N. MN too. My better half gave me a sheet that looked like those bounce things they put in dryers. The box said it was mosquito repellant. I wiped it on and no fooling, no bites till the sweat had washed it away. I keep them around all the time now. I heard the other day that bounce works that way too but havent tried it.

OHHH MY GOSH!!!

I have half a million of them things small enough that they fit through the screens in my house. They will come in even if only one window is open. I don"t know what is going on but it is the worst i have ever seen in years.

I don"t leave any lights on at night. I"ve dumped all the stale water. (there isn"t too much stale water since it is so DRY!!!!! )

I don"t get it. It hasn"t rained in two weeks here and there are baby mosquitoes everywhere in this heat.

Not as many as usual here in Manitoba. BUT, I read this morning that we have a record 445 confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in Manitoba this year. It is believed to have caused 3 deaths. I guess that's the price you pay for 100,000 lakes.

REI has shirts pants and hats that are bug proof and not so heavy that you will get real hot and sweaty. Be carfull spraying a lot of DEET on large portions of sweaty skin. That crap gets right in your blood stream. First signs of too much are quick sharp cramps in your gut.

Dixie looks like she has chicken pox. They don't even leave a mark on me but still drive me nuts swatting them off.
