I need some advice about my John Deere

I own a 1943 John Deere "D" model, the type with the wide front axle and fenders. It has been in my family for some years, and when my father died I had a cosmetic restoration done by a guy out of state. The tractor never really ran right because of an electrical problem, and the fact that the flywheel was walking off the shaft. The flywheel was replaced, but now when the tractor runs there is excessive vibration as though the flywheel is unbalanced.

This has really taken the zing out of tractor ownership, and I don't personally have the knowledge to work on the D. I don't really want to sink any more money in it, and will soon lose the shed it stays in.

I guess my question: is this unpleasant vibration the result of replacing the flywheel? If so, I'm really screwed. I am really discouraged and will probably need to sell the tractor, which I had hoped would be simple and dependable enough to keep for the long haul.

Any thoughts or suggestions? If I have to sell the tractor, where is the best place to advertise it?

Thanks in advance from this novice and discouraged old tractor owner.

One other thing, my 1938 "D" has a counterweight bolted onto the crankshaft inside the engine. I can't imagine anyone leaving it off,,,, but after some of the errors I found when restoring my 38' "D", anything is possible.

When you get it running right, it has a great old sound. BTW, they do shake when idling!

I would carefully check the installation of the flywheel. The flywheel has a huge counterweight "lump" cast into it that offsets a large imbalance on the Crankshaft. Unlike many modern crankshafts, the "D" crankshaft does not have counterweights on the shaft casting.

Easy to check once you have the manual as suggested!

Let us know how it goes.

I would say the fly wheel is on wrong, it is exactly as the other post stated, go to tractor supply and get yourself and I T manual and tackle it yourself, its not a hard job,and you will get some self sattisfaction.

The fylwheel could be on wrong. I helped a guy on a W power unit and he had his on wrong. On his there was a deeper spline that you line up to a screw in the shaft. He had the screw lined up into one of the 2 parting lines where the fylwheel clamps together and not in the special deep groove that was about another 1/4 turn away. Worth checking into on yours.

I can't answer your question specifically.. but I'd be surprised if the flywheel couldn't be ballanced, if it was indeed out of ballance...

A machine shop is where i would investigate the issue..

You are dealing with over 500 cubic inches in 2 cylinders here so it aint gonna be smooth at idle no matter what. Have a "D" expert listen to it and hopefully it's nothing expensive. It' got history...KEEP IT! You won't be sorry.
